Book Review

This being the last book of the Little Boy Lost series, and me being on tenterhooks to finally find out how it was all going to end, I approached reading it with very high expectations. Not to mention quite a bit of trepidation – the two main characters were in such an awful situation by the end of book 5 that I had a hard time seeing how J.P. Barnaby could possibly make it work – and leave me, the "happy ending addict" satisfied as well. I am very happy to report that, for me, this book fully delivered and made me very happy.

Jamie is facing such an uphill battle, it continues to amaze me how he manages to keep going. Yes, there is hope that Brian will finally talk to him again, but in the end, Jamie realizes he has to do this for himself. He wants to become a different man not just for Brian and Jamie's father, who is finally as supportive as he should have been all along. Jamie wants to do this for himself. He has a lot of help, all of which he desperately needs, because the basic battle is his alone to fight. Addiction and the physiological changes the poison have put him through will be with him the rest of his life, but the first steps are hard.

Brian has a very hard time with this and since Jamie tells the story, we don’t get to see his side except through his actions. As much as I would have liked him to have a different reaction, to be more supportive of Jamie earlier on, I do realize the way he behaves is more realistic. Didn’t make me hurt any less (on Jamie's behalf), and it did make me wonder about his earlier promises, but I was able to see where he was coming from. And his position in this is as valid and realistic as it can be.

Let me warn you again: once you start reading this series, and this book is no exception, you will most likely be hooked. The emotions are so real and raw that they will pull you in and the characters will not let you go. The ending to the series finally let me breathe easier but it has been quite a ride! If you think you are strong enough to deal with Jamie and Brian’s lives – warning: even just reading about them might tear you apart emotionally - give this series a go. The blurb on the final book calls it an "epic journey" and I think that is an excellent description. The books are brilliantly written and highly addictive. Thank you, J.P., for creating a truly amazing series!
