Book Blurb

Sometimes, all that matters is being in the right place at the right time.

Rami knows the storm should have killed him. Very much alive, though slightly waterlogged, he can’t shake the feeling that he didn’t survive on his own merits. He had help.

When a person of interest in the legal matter he’s been hired to untangle reveals a strong resemblance to the man who may have saved his life, venturing into uncharted waters becomes the least of Rami’s problems.

A loner living in the shadow of a once-great house, Malcolm is a hard man to pin down. His seemingly impossible feats of heroism have certainly saved lives, but the people of Envern, Maine, are only too eager to allege he had something to do with his employer’s death. Leading a secretive existence under a cloud of suspicion should scupper Malcolm’s appeal, but Rami has secrets of his own and his relationship with danger has always been complicated.

Reader Advisory: This book contains depression and suicidal ideation.

Book Review

This story starts with a mystery, adds a few secrets and the odd enigma… you get the picture. Rami and his drive to figure out what the heck is going on in the small town of Envern, Maine, had me hooked from the first page. Rami showed a lot more courage (or should that be foolhardiness?) than I would have in his situation, and that makes things very interesting. The blurb does mention Rami’s “complicated relationship with danger” -  and that is a statement to be taken seriously. Luckily following Rami’s explorations and discoveries from the safety of my easy chair as I was reading felt safe enough.

So – Rami. He is a paralegal assistant used to dealing with facts, so even when he is presented with the inexplicable mystery of having survived a storm and almost drowning, he doesn’t run screaming or leave well enough alone – he does research. He delves right into finding out about the town recluse, a man everyone avoids like the plague, and what he discovers is more than unusual. And no, I am not going to say more so as not to spoil the surprise.

Malcolm is perfect as the enigmatic, somewhat shadowy man of mystery. He has been accused of all kinds of things, but nobody has been able to pin him down, so he follows his own agenda. Nobody is going to push him out of his home, even though the man he rented it from has died and the dead man’s widow wants Malcolm gone…. What follows are complications galore, hidden agendas all over the place, and more than one twist and turn.

If you like mysterious happenings, men who hunt secrets like their life depends on it, and a read that is entertaining, surprising, and full of the weird and wonderful at the same time, then you will probably like this short story.
