Necromancer Anoki doesn't understand his deep love for Myron. They have only known each other a few days, but it feels like they have loved each other for a lifetime. Because of the curse that transforms Myron into an uncontrollable monster, Anoki had no choice but to condemn him to hell. Now the only way he can reunite with Myron is to track down the person who placed that curse and remove it.
But Anoki’s quest leads him to long hidden family secrets and draws the attention of demonic forces determined to stop him. Slowly the true nature of his relationship with Myron comes to light, and that places him in a final confrontation with the deadliest obstacle standing between them—his merciless, powerful mother.
Sequel to Brown-Eyed Devil
The follow-up to ’Brown-Eyed Devil’ does not disappoint and gifted me with more action, otherworldliness, and romantic chemistry than its predecessor, which definitely fulfilled the criteria on those subjects. The initial book of the series introduced us to eighteen–year-old Myron, a high schooler who discovers that he is changing into something monstrous as a result of a family curse. This second book reveals its story through the eyes of Anoki, the necromancer who enlightened Myron as to what the changes meant and despite falling deeply in love with the teenager—still locked him in Hell. Rich in detail, with vivid world building and heart-wrenching romance, this is a great second book to a terrific and surprising series.
The story opens with Anoki on a self-appointed mission to find out who placed the curse that transformed Myron into a dangerous monster. To do so he must look into the past and examine the teenager’s family. If he can unlock the puzzle, he can free Myron from Hell and they can further explore the magnetic pull they feel toward each other. Despite Anoki’s good intentions, the road to Hell is paved with secrets, demons, ghosts, and all manner of hellish fiends. In seeking information on Myron’s family, Anoki is forced to confront his own. Suddenly he is embattled with family members he has not seen in years: mainly his evil twin brother and a mother so unspeakable that Anoki fears to think about her, lest she think herself summoned. Anoki’s father also reappears after years of estrangement and offers his aid. But can Anoki trust a man who steals the lifeforce of humans to keep himself young?
With dangerous creatures popping up to attack him at every turn, Anoki is pretty much on his own, at least until memories he had no idea were lost are returned to him. As a result he understands his love for Myron thoroughly and is determined to free his enslaved lover. But Anoki, Myron, and their allies must fight not only for their lives and their love, but also for the continued existence of the entire living world.
This exciting, and hard-to-put down book is packed with originality and a remarkable depth of vision for a story of this size. I love that its contents are not a repeat of the first book, but a true expansion of the original, taking me to the heartland of Anoki’s “ether” world and showcasing the difficulties facing a one hundred and nineteen-year-old Native American necromancer. More than a paranormal love story, the tale has a nifty sci-fi-ish, time travel edge and yet easily maintains its focus on the amazingly romance between Myron and Anoki.
My favorite part of a story filled with great moments was when Anoki’s memory returned. Exquisite, emotion-wrought romantic passages detail how Myron and Anoki truly met and explore the exhilarating passion between the two men. Both of these leads are to die for. Hot, courageous fighters who are highly lovable—their foreplay alone could probably scorch the earth.
Excellent world building, terrific fight scenes, good dialogue, and major family intrigue kept me turning the pages. Even when I wasn’t reading I was constantly wondering how it would all come together. Would Myron and Anoki make it? I can’t say more without giving spoilers, but I had a great time reading this adventurous, paranormal, male/male romance that delivered so much more than its blurb suggests. I could see this series being made into a movie, which would be great, but I also believe it would make a fantastic graphic novel or better still—Motion Book!
Thank you, Evan Gilbert, for this exciting journey that took me through intense, action-packed, and delicious decades in a matter of hours.
