Book Review

Even geniuses are not exempt from being in deep sh*t. Or maybe it is especially those with extra talents who have to fight especially hard when bad things begin to happen. In this story set in a world of magical and paranormal beings trying to make a living just like everyone else, I was fascinated by the details and amused by many observations about human nature made clearer in a supernatural context. The characters were a lot of fun, and the slight mystery around what was going on made me turn the pages, wanting to find out what Quentin was going to do and how everyone else would react. All in all, this is a great adventure and a sizzling romance all in one well-written package.

Quentin is in enormous trouble, and while he may be gifted around spells and potions, he can’t seem to catch a break. His mother is dying of a cancer no magic can cure, and the bills are mounting up to the point where Quentin has no idea how he will ever pay them. Quentin’s best friend is murdered, four illegal bone dogs - read: bespelled zombie dogs - suddenly follow him everywhere, and an old wizard friend with unreliable foresight mumbles something about a coming war. Imagine how overwhelmed Quentin, who is a pacifist, becomes when he finds out he is supposed to fight in this war. Not only that, but a new vampire is in town and he has his sights set on Quentin.

What follows is a suspenseful story about Quentin figuring out how to earn enough money quickly enough to help his mother fight the cancer. The unorthodox method of becoming a vampire hunter to do so made me grin, but the twists and turns as the story develops sure kept my attention! And in the end, as Quentin finds out, hunting a vampire can have some very unexpected but rather exciting consequences.

If you like stories where all the supernatural stops are pulled out, if unlikely pairings are your thing, and if you think a hot romance gets better with the lovers facing a few threats and some deadly danger, then you will probably like this novella. I was very happy to find out there is going to be a sequel!
