Book Review

This collection of enemies-to-lovers stories needs to come with a warning. Canadian Bessette and Slovenian Láska are not just professional ice hockey players, they are also both super-alpha males who act as if they want to kill each other most of the time. Yes there is an attraction, but it is raw, purely physical, and that makes it explosive in every sense of the word. I read these stories before, when they were first published a few years ago, and rereading them now, one after the other in this box set, I found myself totally caught up in the rush of their encounters once again. This is a fun series of stories to read, just make sure you know what you’re in for. Fluffy romance or sweet loving this is not.

Puck You
Bessette and Láska are professional ice hockey players. They are on rival teams and have had quite a few hostile encounters during their games. But when the aggression between them moves off the field and into the dressing room, it morphs into encounters of a different kind. Bessette is angry about how Láska treated him during the game, and they have already gone at it on the field, but Láska wants more. Bessette has no idea what the man has planned for him. When it happens? It is very, very hot - but only because Bessette clearly enjoys himself. He must be into pain more than he realizes, and that revelation carries him through the somewhat unrealistic act Láska puts him through.

If you like your sex a little violent, if you enjoy two strong men getting it on, and if you do not require even a shred of romance, you may like this short story.

Puck You, Two
Bessette and Láska are at it again. Bessette says he has no idea why he follows Láska's invitation to meet him at a fitness club, but by now it is abundantly clear that he just doesn't want to admit it. He is hot for Láska, and the brand of abusive sex they share turns him on more than he ever thought possible. Interestingly, Láska turns out to have a bit of a biting kink (as in being bitten) as well, so things may be about to even out...

If you like hot encounters in secret places, if almost-violent sex and quite a bit of pain sound interesting (as a fantasy only, mind you!), and if you want to know how Bessette and Láska behave off the ice, you may like this short story.

Puckin’ Right
An interesting turn of events takes place on two fronts in this story. One is that Láska joins Bessette's team, and they suddenly find themselves playing on the same side. Bessette is not at all comfortable with this. He still tells himself he hates Láska. The second surprise is that when they do have their encounter "to sort things out", Bessette takes and keeps the upper hand. Both of them are left totally lost after this one. It will be interesting to see where the next story takes them.

If you like two strong men fighting for supremacy both on and off the ice, if you don’t mind the sex being more than a bit violent, and if you want to see Bessette dishing it out for once, you will probably like this short story.

Outta My Crease
In a totally unexpected turn of events, this story doesn't come to any sort of conclusion at all, but throws the door wide open to any sort of continuation you can imagine. While an interesting twist, it left me a little lost. Like the rug has just been torn from under me and I've landed ass-first on the hard floor. Ouch!

If you have followed this series and like the previous stories, and if you don't mind a major twist, you will probably like this story too.

Crease Violations
Well, this was a big surprise. As is clear from the blurb, Bessette and Láska add a third guy to the mix, and further complications are bound to follow. If, like me, you find yourself drawn to Bessette and Láska’s almost animalistic encounters, you might enjoy the addition of the goalkeeper. He is entirely too submissive for his own good, and asking Bessette and Láska to punish him is a huge risk – not that he realizes this before they start. Fortunately the guy gets exactly what he wants, and Bessette has yet another revelation about the depths of his depravity.

If you like tough men and rough love, if you enjoy reading about athletes and what they might get up to after a game, and if you're looking for a hot, if somewhat unusual, threesome, then you will probably enjoy this short story.

Take It Back Door
The final story in this set begins with a shock. Láska is injured during a game, and considering the kind of forces at play, getting hit by a puck in any part of the body can have serious consequences. Bessette has to continue playing the game, and that is difficult even for a tough guy like him. Worse than that, he has gotten very close to Láska but refuses to admit it, so he ignores him for two whole weeks. I suspect the fact that Láska has been benched for the season due to his brain injury must have something to do with it – I recognize avoidance when I see it. Luckily, so does the goalkeeper, and he comes up with his own unique way of fixing things. Of course, once they visit Láska, nothing goes as expected, but somehow that did not surprise me.

If you liked the previous stories, if you think Bessette and Láska deserve a “grand finale’, and if you want to see them go at it yet again, then you will probably enjoy this story.
