Book Blurb

When Quinn, the Supreme Alpha of all the Nine Territories first sees a young man in the arena, he is struck by his beauty and by the fact that despite his chains, he’s barely contained. Quinn recognizes him almost at once as the human who led an assassination attempt on him just weeks before, yet when he tries to take him into custody, he’s shocked to find the human is his fated mate. He has only one option to keep the council from executing the young man for his crimes—to make an example of Aaron, and to debase and degrade him as his love slave so that none of Aaron's followers will celebrate him as a martyr or a hero.

Aaron is on a quest to find his brother, separated from him during the plague that devastated the population, killing seventy percent of all the humans on the planet. When he gets word that his brother is among the rebels, he joins them too, hoping to find him. Instead he gets caught up in a failed assassination attempt on the Supreme Alpha, a strong, powerful wolf shifter who now has Aaron right where he wants him--at his mercy.
Despite his growing attraction to Aaron, Quinn has to try to keep his heart from getting too involved, and when another assassination plot is uncovered, Quinn has to make a difficult decision. He must put Aaron aside despite his feelings for him and imprison him, even though the mating bond between them means Aaron will suffer and die without Quinn. And when Aaron disappears and word gets back to Quinn that he’s dying, he has to take a leap of faith to bring him home and back to Quinn's bed where he belongs.

Book Review

In this world, set in an undefined near future, humankind has been practically eradicated by some plague similar to the Black Death, referred to as Pestilence. Werewolves can’t get the sickness, and they are left to rebuild. Since they believe humans caused their own almost-extinction, and think that proved humans are too stupid to care for themselves, they have taken over. Humans are integrated into the pack structure and “retrained” – all except the rebels. Nice setting, right? Well, with a world like this and werewolves clearly so much stronger than humans, conflict is bound to arise and the fight for what resources are left will be fierce.

Quinn is, in many ways, a typical arrogant alpha. His position as Supreme Alpha of all nine northern American territories means he is in charge, and anyone who challenges that idea is in trouble. Any human who doesn’t submit to his supreme benevolence is in even more trouble. When Quinn discovers that one of the most wanted rebel leaders is his mate, he decides to make the man an example and turns him into his love slave - forcibly. No leniency, no being nice, no patience. Quinn is not a nice guy. And when the mate bond tries to soften him, he refuses to give in and becomes even nastier. Yep, you guessed it, I did not like him. And when he finally has an epiphany about Aaron he lets himself be distracted and everything gets worse. Then Quinn believes the lying words of a traitor and, without checking Aaron’s side of the story, makes the single most selfish, uncaring, and murderous decision, essentially condemning Aaron to death.

Aaron is in the wrong place at the wrong time. He joined the rebels for his own reasons and all he wants is to find his brother. He never got near any of the violence – but nobody asks for his side of the story and even if they did, they wouldn’t believe him. Aaron hates being humiliated and having his freedom and choices taken away. And when he realizes he likes submitting to Quinn – mostly – and begins to hope that maybe Quinn is not as bad as Aaron first thought, Quinn pulls a super a**hole move and makes Aaron realize there is no hope. It returns some of the power to Aaron, and he turns out much stronger than I thought.

Quinn and Aaron do not have an easy relationship. And even though Quinn redeems himself just a little, I never really warmed up to him. What is more important is that Aaron was able to make his peace with him. Quinn still has much to learn at the end of this volume – but hey, he is the Supreme Alpha, so he has to be somewhat tough, maybe even mean. The supporting characters of both the helpful and the traitorous kind were interesting as well, and this world, with all its strangeness and political machinations, definitely has me wanting to find out more.

If you like post-apocalyptic stories, if strong alphas who border on overly domineering are your thing, and if you’re looking for a read about a man who needs to learn to live with the fact he is mated with a stubborn, sometimes idiotic, werewolf who thinks he always knows best, then you will probably like this novel.
