Frankie Di Salvo thought he had died and gone to heaven the day Porter Reece walked into his life. The man was everything Frankie had always dreamed of. But more than that, Porter's friendly personality and protectiveness drew Frankie in like an eager puppy. He was willing to agree to anything to keep Porter.
Porter Reece had been looking for one good thing in his life, and he found it in a gorgeous man named Frankie. The times he was able to spend with Frankie between missions were the only things that kept him going when life got hard.
When Frankie's life gets put in danger, Porter does the only thing he can think of and takes him back to the compound, knowing beyond a shadow of a doubt that his fellow marines and friends will help him protect Frankie. But the danger his precious love is in isn't just coming from an outside source. There are those at the compound that want Frankie gone as well.
Can Porter convince them that Frankie is innocent before it's too late?
And even if he does, will Frankie still be around for him to love?
What an explosive installment of the ‘Special Operations’ series this volume turned out to be! And I thought it would be a quietly intense one, since Porter is involved. Porter has been around for a while, as a secondary character, but he always seemed so withdrawn, even cold. Was I glad to find out there’s another side to him – not that he easily shows it. And that turns out to be a big part of the problems between him and Frankie, the unassuming waiter Porter falls for. Had Porter been able to open up just a little more, had he considered talking to Frankie rather than making assumptions, much of what they had to go through would not have happened. Then again, the fact that they did means I got to read a very exciting, suspenseful, and action-packed book!
Frankie is cute and mostly harmless, very naïve, and has a core of steel I should have seen coming. After all, he grew up in foster care, has no family he mentions, and yet he managed to create a life for himself. My heart went out to him when I realized how mean the people are at the restaurant where he works, and I was relieved when he meets Porter. But I relaxed too soon…
Porter is a man with secrets. He goes on dangerous missions, and even though he never talks abut his work, Frankie figures out the gist of it pretty fast. Porter’s ability to keep his mouth shut may be helpful for his job working for Charles Pennington III, his former commander in the Marines and the main character from book one. But keeping secrets from Frankie is the wrong strategy, and puts both of their lives in danger.
Frankie is very clearly in mortal danger. One assassination attempt follows the other, but the initial ones are so cleverly camouflaged that neither Frankie nor Porter understand what’s going on. By the time Porter figures it out and steps in, it’s almost too late. And then Porter treats Frankie so badly I was ready to smack him upside his head – repeatedly – to make him see sense. The others in the team aren’t any better though. What a mess!
If you like the ‘Special Operations’ series with its intense stories about former Marines and the men they fall in love with, if you enjoy the “strong silent type” who gets himself and his lover in trouble by not communicating, then moves heaven and hell to save both their hides, and if you're looking for an action-packed read with plenty of suspense, kidnappings, assassination attempts, and some interpersonal drama, then you will probably like this novella. I’m hoping there will be another adventure set in this world – soon!
