As part of his new duties as ambassador to the Thresl king, he is sent to investigate the source of the Thresl smuggling. Unfortunately, when things go wrong they go very wrong and Zander’s Thresl, Leo, is kidnapped. It will take all of his love and diplomatic skills to find their way back together.

 

Book Review

The culture and abilities of the Thresl continue to fascinate me. In this third book, my understanding of their abilities and needs deepened, and a very dark plot, hinted at in earlier books, is finally exposed. The central relationship between Zander and Leo is different than the previous ones, since Leo refuses to shift for the longest time. Usually, the Thresl assumes human form fairly quickly after they meet their mate, so this was a nice variation and offered some additional understanding of the Thresl psyche.

Zander is a diplomat through and through. He comes from a rich family with high expectations for him to do well, and has never even thought about rebelling. Well, not until his father started to threaten that his Thresl might need to move on since they still have not bonded after two years. Zander loves the catlike being though, human shape or not, and they already share a mental bond, so that is out of the question. It is this threat that makes Zander realize maybe it's time to stand up to his father and become his own man. The events that follow when he and Leo are sent on a mission to discover who runs the Thresl slave ring King Vohne has discovered only serve to deepen Zander's resolve.

Leo is an unusual Thresl in that he loves his cat form more than other Thresls we've gotten to know. Yes, he wants to experience his mate in human form, but since they are already bonded, in his mind, he doesn’t see what the rush is. Only when he understands how much he is hurting Zander, both mentally and physically, by refusing to shift does he change his mind. Luckily, the old, mysterious, and very powerful Thresl named Saint is there to hand out some wisdom which will help Leo.

Both men go through hell when they get separated and Leo ends up kidnapped and sold for the second time in his life. Not to fear though, Zander is on the case! If you like stories that unabashedly mix paranormal elements with science fiction, if you enjoy reading about alien cultures, trying to figure out how they work as you follow the main characters in their adventures, and if you're looking for a read that is hot, intensely suspenseful, and full of new discoveries, then you will probably like this novella.
