Eric Wilson volunteered to leave Earth to get away from his homophobic family. The only way he’d ever be able to have a life and fall in love was for him to start over somewhere far away. From the start, Eric knew there was no guarantee which planet he would live on. But, he never expected to go to the desert planet of Noglion. Eric doesn’t know much about the alien world. The only thing he’s heard are rumors, and those rumors terrify him.
Commander Gru Poez’iq knew he wanted Eric as soon as the beautiful human boarded his starship. But, in order to claim a pet, Gru has to get permission from his older brother, Finn. On Noglion, the males of the same bloodline share a mate. With his brother’s blessing, Gru goes to the arena and fights for Eric. After claiming the human’s body, Gru and his brothers, Khaun and Finn, must love and protect their pet, even if it’s from other Noglions, jealous that they claimed a human.
After a devastating global war, Earth of the year 2327 is in trouble and now depends on aliens helping to rebuild. Deals have been struck with various planets to “export” men and women willing to become the mates of aliens in exchange for their families being taken care of for life. Glecerus is the central trading post, if you will, but other planets are part of the agreement as well – for aliens have faced catastrophes of their own and many need humans to repopulate. Much like the other men in this series, Eric has agreed to be shipped off-planet – but he is shocked when he finds out that Glecerus is not his final destination. Instead he ends up on desert planet Noglion with its fierce warriors who keep human mates as “pets”.
Eric does not regret leaving his homophobic family behind; they never accepted him, anyway. But Noglion is not what he is prepared for. It is a hot, dry world where men of the same family share a mate who is expected to wear a collar and doesn’t get to wear clothes in public. Eric is terrified, but the captain of the ship that transported him from Glecerus to Noglion has proven trustworthy so Eric gives him the benefit of the doubt.
Gru is determined to “win” Eric in the arena as soon as he sees him on the spaceship he commands. After a pretty brutal fight in the arena he takes him home and hopes for the best in terms of their relationship. Gru’s brothers support the acclimatization in their own way, but mainly they just fall in immediate lust (and eventual love) with Eric as well.
Eric is very willing to learn about Noglion, and his adventures as he is introduced to some of their customs (by all three brothers) help him to understand a culture that looks cruel at first glance. The setting and different events are described in great detail and made me feel as if I were right there with Eric. The Noglions are warriors at heart, but they turn out to be just as vulnerable or generous, in certain situations, as humans.
If you like to explore imagined alien worlds through the eyes of a newcomer, if you think that a man can find happiness in the strangest situations if he is willing, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read with a few surprises, then you will probably like this novella.
