The year is 2327. Earth, once strong, is now trying to recover from the devastation of the Great War. During the battle, millions of lives were lost and cities were destroyed. Needing to rebuild, the government turned to other planets. One day, a starship arrived from the planet of Glecerus. The aliens traded technology and medicine for willing humans to become mates to their people.
Sebastian Cain is struggling to survive. His only option for a better life is to leave Earth. He volunteers to go to Glecerus. He’s looking for a fresh start and the only family he has left, an older brother. But life on Glecerus takes some getting used to, and Sebastian must learn the customs before becoming a mate to a Glecerian male.
High King Auden Q'Tal and Captain Regin Priq'aq are both interested in becoming Sebastian’s mate. Instead of bidding on the human at auction, the aliens battle it out, and the winner gets to mark and claim Sebastian.
Now, I may have mentioned this before, but it bears repeating, just in case you missed it. I love alien abductions that result in happy ever afters, and I love series where some alien culture has an agreement (or contract) with one or more Earth governments about "supplying" them with mates. There have been a few series starring variations on this theme at Siren Publishing, and this newest one, ‘Alien Lovers’, looks very promising, in my opinion. It’s 2327, Earth has suffered a devastating global war, and needs help if humans are ever going to rebuild. It’s the reason for asking for outside help, and for pretty much accepting any aliens and their conditions that come along. Risky, but what can you do when your own stupidity almost exterminates your entire species? This first book kicks off the series with a bang, by adding two more of my favorite tropes: a three-way relationship (even though this is a case of “shared” mate, not a true triad) and some almost-surprise mpreg. What more could I ask for?
Sebastian has not had an easy life. Like many humans, he was raised in poverty, and when his mother became sick and they couldn’t afford the medical care she needed, Sebastian’s older brother volunteered to participate in the lottery held to determine who would become a Gleceran mate as soon as he turned eighteen. It meant his family received proper housing, food, and medicine as “compensation”, but Sebastian has never forgotten his brother or the sacrifice he made. Ten years later, Sebastian’s parents have died, and with no family left, Sebastian decides to follow Jason to Glecerus.
The lottery has been abandoned for a system based on volunteers, but when Sebastian arrives on Glecerus, he discovers that there is still an “auction” to determine who of the many Glecerans wanting a human mate gets one. He is appalled, but is told he “should have read the manual” – a book that is given to all volunteers and is supposed to prepare them for life on a new planet. It made me chuckle – whoever reads manuals? Especially men! But it provided some much appreciated comic relief to have the manual –or rather the fact that he neglected to read it - ”haunt” Sebastian as he deals with his new reality.
And there are lots of details to deal with. Sebastian makes friends with Aaron and Georgie, two humans with very different needs and outlooks on life. Not one, but two super-attractive Gleceran males are after him. Then he discovers that Jason is apparently more than fine – but he can’t see him until he is mated, even though they are family. The list goes on, and all these discoveries, combined with a great setting on a strange planet and some intriguing cultural differences, definitely kept me entertained.
If you like imaginative science fiction, if you are intrigued by the idea of a man who only wants to find his brother and instead ends up coveted by two aliens, and if you’re looking for a read that is entertaining, suspenseful, occasionally funny, and very hot, then you will probably like this novella. I can’t wait to find out more!
