Rick Wentworth has had enough of one night stands and quickies in clubs. It takes a night of uncharacteristic hedonism to make Rick admit what he really wants - someone to love him. But for that to happen, he needs to make some changes. Rick can do that. After all, what’s the alternative? And when he meets a guy who ticks all his boxes, he can’t believe his luck. His boss Blake Davis, and Blake’s fiancé Will Parkinson, however, aren’t convinced. They want to know more about Mr. Perfect, and their instincts are keener than Rick’s. Both men want to protect him. As it turns out, they needn’t have worried. Rick has a guardian angel…
When Angelo Tarallo sees Rick for the first time, it’s a match made in Heaven, as far as he’s concerned. And when he rescues Rick from danger, it gives him the opportunity to get to know the man who has captivated him. Before long, it’s plain to both men that this could lead somewhere. But when Angelo’s traditional Sicilian family finally discover what he’s been hiding from them for so long, an ultimatum spells heartache for the lovers – and worse.
*Contains an MMM scene
‘Personal Changes’ picks up right at the end of ‘Making It Personal’ – not counting the epilogue that showed a piece of Will and Blake’s future. But even though I knew part of what was next for them, my enjoyment of Rick and Angelo’s story didn’t suffer at all. The focus of this second installment was firmly on Rick and his newfound determination to find a man to love, rather than to race from one hookup to the next. Paired with Angelo’s gentlemanly behavior, followed by horrible issues with his Sicilian family, this story certainly held my attention.
Rick works at Trinity Publishing, loves his job in book marketing, and struck up a friendship with Will as the only fellow gay man before Blake came out. He has had a crush on Blake for all six years he has worked there, and with Blake firmly off the market, Rick begins to reconsider his modus operandi. Quick hookups in clubs have lost their appeal, but even though that insight is easy actually changing his behavior is much more difficult. His first attempt at a serious relationship goes spectacularly wrong. His second, following Angelo becoming his knight in shining armor, looks like it is going in the right direction. Rick has never been so hopeful and gets more deeply involved by the day.
Angelo notices Rick right after New Year, but it takes a while before an opportunity to get in touch opens up. Not the way Angelo would have wanted it to happen, but when he sees Rick in danger, he steps in and they begin to talk and get to know each other. Angelo is amazed how well they fit and all seems to be well until one of his brothers sees him and Rick holding hands, tells Angelo’s homophobic father, and all hell breaks loose. Angelo receives an ultimatum: the family and getting married to a woman of his father’s choosing, or Rick. And no matter how independent he is or how much he loves Rick, Angelo has been taught to obey his parents his whole life, he can only do as he is told and break things off with Rick.
The resulting pain is excruciating – on both sides. Rick has no idea what happened, and the not knowing why is driving him up the wall. Angelo has lost the will to live, his work suffers, and it takes an intervention for him to come to his senses and to know what to do. But weeks and weeks have passed, and he may be too late… The whole situation had me worried and I could not put the book down until the very end. What an emotional roller coaster!
If you want to know how the guys at Trinity Publishing are doing, if you like contemporary stories with lots of drama, heat, and heartbreak, and if you’re looking for a read that is an emotional roller coaster from beginning to end, then you will probably like this novel.
