Book Review

Sometime during those early years was when I started hearing the plants talk. Well, it wasn't talking so much as feeling. “This one makes me thirsty, Mama,” I said, one day, pointing to a clump of wilting strawberries.
“Don't say such things.”

What should've been a beautiful and amazing childhood for Andreas (Andy), a young boy born in a strawberry patch, instead became miserable because his mother wanted him to be normal. She refused to believe her son was a Sensitive, like his father, although Andy was tuned to the land, the plants, flowers, trees, and even the weeds which grew on it. Andy didn't know his father, or any of the history, growing up, as his dad was killed before he was born. If it wasn't for two of his father's friends, Andrew and Everett, I'm not sure Andy would've survived childhood without going mad. As it was, it was a horrible time keeping his abilities a secret from his mom, and trying so hard to be the normal son she wanted.

"Finding this place seemed too good to be true, and I was heady with my newfound freedom. No more being forced to hunt my fellow cambions - the half incubi Los Cazadores captured and used for their own sexual pleasures - and no more watching my brother lose his mind from seeing me tortured."

Enrique has been running from his past and when he lands at Andy's citrus farm, he finally feels like he can relax his guard just a little. Now Enrique's incubus side can't help but take note of Andy's young, virginal self, but Enrique knows better than to get involved with the boss's son. Not to mention that Andy isn't even eighteen years old. But, Enrique can't help noticing the desperate loneliness that Andy struggles with, and it makes Enrique want to be his friend. When Andy tells Enrique his secret about being a Sensitive, it almost makes Enrique want to share his own pain. Almost. On the night of Andy's eighteenth birthday, he seduces Enrique. I know, sounds far fetched for a virgin to seduce the half incubus, but Enrique, the man, and Enrique, the monster, both want Andy. But something unusual occurs and now Andy can feel Enrique the same way he can the plants, although he doesn't tell him this. The next morning Enrique is gone before the sun comes up. But Enrique's past comes hunting him, and, unfortunately, Andy, his mama, and their citrus farm are in the way.

Now the truths behind so many actions begin to be revealed. Who Enrique really is. The misery and downright brutal pain he has survived and escaped from. Who Andrew is and what the group he belongs to, Wardens, do. Who Andy's father is. So many secrets and lies revealed. So much pain purged to allow light to begin to grow. And seeing Enrique gain the confidence and shed the rage he's always had, but never knew, to destroy the Los Cazadores and their reign of terror, was a beautiful thing.

This was a unique story very different, in a really good way, from the run of the mill fantasy and paranormal books that are out there. I enjoyed it very much although more history and background on Wardens and cambions would've been helpful. If you enjoy something with a little bite and a fantasy world, then this might be the read for you.
