Biologist Arlo Perez has spent his whole life avoiding decisions, confrontations, anything concrete. Anything resembling a commitment. When his lover, Miguel, dumps him, a depressed Arlo decides to put down roots in Merced, a small California town nestled between Yosemite and the old gold-panning country region. There, he secures a new fellowship at a college and looks forward to adventure and fun.
But just as he’s getting used to normal, he gets a whole lot more than he bargained for.
One day when his car breaks down, Arlo winds up at the mercy of a deranged garage owner in Port Hueneme. And somehow, he finds himself tossed back in time to an era of knights, dragons, and pit fights. Suddenly, he’s in Mexico, 1867, and there’s only one way out—fight or die.
Can Arlo get himself out of this horrible and confusing mess? Can he stop feeling out of place and out of his senses? Or is he completely out of time?
First edition published by Amber Allure, January 2015.
If you have ever had one of those weird dreams where people from your life (both past and present) pop up in the most unusual and unexpected circumstances, then you’ll be able to relate to what happens to Arlo, the main character who tells this story in first person. What happens to him is rather fantastical, but he takes it as the lesson it might have been intended to be and runs with it – right into a new version of his life.
What happens to him is rather shocking – but people do weird things when money is involved. I was never clear on what was real and what was not while he went on an adventure in ancient Mexico. Everything is vaguely linked to true events in the Mexico of 1867, but A.J. Llewellyn gives it a slant all its own. Arlo has to learn to not run from things or people that threaten him – and it’s not an easy lesson!
If you prefer your romances with a significant dose of action, adventure, and a few shocks to the system, if men fighting for their life are your thing, and if you’re looking for a read that is as chaotic and fantastical as it is unique, then you might like this novella.
