Book Blurb

Melanie Stokes was a doctor—a very good one, or so she hoped. She was calm and cool under pressure, and very little fazed her. Until…

Caitlin Joseph ran a small retirement home for older women in need. The fact that everyone in the house was gay was a coincidence, although it did cut down the number of women agreeing to live there.

Mel took up an offer to do some relief work for a local community center when their regular doctor was away on holidays. As soon as she arrived at the home she knew something was different about the place. Was it the little old lady chasing the paper boy down the street or the sign saying “Dykes Retirement Home”?

But there was something about the place that also appealed to her. Sure, Caitlin was cute as a button, but it was more the fact that she took very good care of her charges, despite their rather bizarre behavior.

The older women seized the opportunity to introduce a woman into Caitlin’s lonely life, using any means possible to keep Mel coming back. Their plans were boosted by the introduction of another woman into the house, who set hearts a fluttering and blood pressure rising.  Now if she was a lesbian it would have been perfect…

Book Review

This story is a romp and a half. It takes place in a rather curious senior residence where the four women being taken care of are all 'out' lesbians. It turns out the caretaker, who took over when her grandmother died, is also a lesbian. It was just hilarious to be around these seniors who have no qualms about their sexual preferences and all have some hysterical quirks, especially the woman who believes she is an active member of the resistance during World War Two. I definitely recommend this as a fun, poignant, and completely delightful story!

Doctor Melanie Stokes, Mel, is substituting for a community center doctor and so gets sent to the curious senior residence when a call for a physician is placed. Mel kind of falls for the caretaker and curiously outs herself to her patient. Oh my, Mel has no idea what she is getting herself into. Yet, she recommends this senior residence for a patient of hers looking for placement. Oh the plot definitely thickens and Mel is smack-dab in the middle of it!

Caitlin Joseph is the current caretaker at the curious senior residence. Her grandmother ran it and also raised her. She continues to manage the household in honor of her grandmother, mostly because she genuinely likes the marvelous cast of characters even when she is at her wits end. She has been doing this on her own for about five years and that is how long it’s been since she has had a day off. So, when it seems that Mel has offered to take her out that very night she made her first house call, Caitlin let out a resounding “yessssss”!

Comedy, pathos, intrigue, and beautiful human emotion and fortitude. This book has it in spades. All the ladies contribute to the romp and I just loved being along for the ride. Plus, it was salubrious to be around such fascinating lesbian women in their seventies and eighties. This diverse group of older women with extraordinary strengths, talents, and feelings were an eye-opening delight! However, I need to give special recognition to newly added straight women who joined their ranks and provided a magnificent focal point for everyone's talent to be drawn together rising to the challenge. I loved it. I truly hope I get the chance to read about more exploits from a senior’s point of view!
