Forester Veld loses a piece of himself to mute baker Oren when they first meet, but Oren is vowed to Haram. When Haram is killed, Veld denies his heart to respect the mourning period. It’s the right thing to do.
During Haram’s funeral, Oren proudly bares the brands that show the nature of their love; Haram owned him, heart and body. The elves pity Oren and think he’s broken.
Veld has no intention of dishonouring Haram’s memory, but his death may not have been an accident. Only a forester can learn what the trees have seen. However, Oren’s independence is threatened, and if Veld does not offer what Oren needs, Oren may never be his to claim.

Tales of the Forest stories can be read in any order.
NOTE: This is the second revised/re-edited edition of Oren's Right, and includes an extra bonus scene. It was previously published by Storm Moon Press in September 2013.
Elves and their secret rituals offer a very rich source of potential stories and worlds. In ‘Oren’s Right’, Blaine D. Arden shows a small glimpse into the world of foresters, tree and cloud elves, and the life they lead. The main characters, forester Veld and baker Oren, are fascinating, as are all the secondary characters of this story. This story is a fascinating mix of a character study, a murder mystery, and some BDSM elements, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Forester Veld moved into the village that is Oren’s home two years ago, and fell for Oren immediately. But Oren is in a committed partnership, so Veld restrains himself. His job as forester includes taking care of the trees, which includes “convincing” some of them to become homes to the elves. The description of how he does this is fascinating, as is the entire elven lore of this world. The truth seeker (she would be a detective on our world, I guess) needs Veld’s skills to help identify who killed Oren’s partner, but he is not the only one attacked.
Oren is a great baker, and he is mute. Not that this stops him from communicating his need to be owned, to be taken care of, and Veld is sorely tempted. But Oren is still in his mourning period, and Veld knows Oren’s partner did not want to share him, but it gets even more complicated than that! There are twists and turns, emotions run high, and the final solution may be unexpected but it is utterly right.
If you like stories with a touch of the supernatural, if special D/s and BDSM relationships are of interest to you, and if you’re looking for a read that is as unusual and charming as it is mysterious and romantic, then you will probably like this short novella. I definitely look forward to reading more stories set in the ‘Tales of the Forest’ world.
