Book Review

Just as much a fairy tale as the first book, 'Sex and Candy', this sequel nevertheless picks up some of the darker elements of Fairyland. This is an interesting counterpoint to the lighter elements in the Summer Fae Festival and had me fascinated from the start. Oh, and it was great to see Jing (a Sugar Plum Fairy) and his handsome Fairy Prince William from the first book again. And yes, the chocolate pants are back as well. Yum!

Orly is a Moon Fairy, and his bigoted mother has banished from home (and with that, from court) for being gay—twelve years ago. This introduces a more serious note, and the mystery around his mother suddenly wanting him back intrigued me. I was grateful Orly has a powerful ally in Mên, the moon god, because the whole situation around Orly having to attend the Summer Fae Festival and Jing's wedding just sounded fishy.

Mên is super cute and exactly the right partner for Orly. He grounds Orly, and makes him realize there is more to their relationship than having fun. The concept of the darker creatures from the Forest of the Lost banding together is wonderful, and Mên's patient support helps Orly see the truth of where he and Mên stand.

The secondary characters deserve a mention as well; this story contains some amazing creatures, from gnomes to jin, and other assorted magical beings. If you like fairy tales with a touch of darkness, if you enjoy reading about an exiled fairy realizing where his real home is, and if you want to find out what goes on at the Summer Fae festivities, then all you need to do is read this short book. It's fun, is all about the yummy food and family, and will make you smile for sure.
