Can an accidental Daddy love a boy for real?
Jensen Cartwright managed to get to forty-seven years old thinking he would never meet a man that wanted the sort of relationship he craved until Dashael literally fell into his arms.
Homeless, and convinced adulthood is some cruel joke forced on him to make him lonely, Dash is overawed by the sexy older man who seems to offer him everything he's ever wanted including story time, bath time, and special play time.
One Cup of Daddy contains an overworked businessman who finds out that cuddling a sweet boy and keeping him safe might be the best thing he's ever done, and a scared boy who discovers that finding a Daddy and holding on tight might just be the best recipe for love ever written.
This was certainly a sweet story, featuring a young man named Dashael whom anyone would love to take home with them and protect. Based on the blurb, I expected Daddy Jensen to assume the care for the virtually homeless young man and thereby show readers the love and trust between a Daddy and his little boy. Unfortunately, due to Jensen’s inexperience with that role and his lack of surety about being a Daddy, the dynamics between the two characters felt weak.
Jensen hasn’t had a boyfriend/partner/lover/boy for a while. His last boy told him in no uncertain terms that he’s too overbearing, with too much of a take-charge attitude so he lost himself in work and didn’t worry about relationships. When he discovers Dashael living in an apartment above a store Jensen purchased, he sees him as a boy who needs his help and insta-love, or at least insta-attraction, ensues. But, throughout the story, Jensen second-guesses his care for the boy and frequently wonders if his attitude would be perceived as too smothering. Dash is mostly happy, though little issues throw him back into doubt and angst along the way. He likes having Jensen make decisions for him but doesn’t want to financially depend on him, so when they work out a compromise whereby Dash does some housework in exchange for room and board, he is happy—until the next doubt surfaces.
Label them both clueless because it took both Jensen’s sister (who has a Mommy/child dynamic with her own partner) and Jensen’s friend Patrick, who happens to be Dash’s doctor, to point out that Jensen’s personality is perfect for a Daddy and Dash’s for a submissive boy. Acknowledging the dynamic out loud is positive, but still Jensen doubts. In fact, though Dash has multiple reasons due to past trauma to keep from trusting in Jensen, he wholeheartedly adapts to the Daddy/boy dynamic. Jensen, however, continues to doubt himself, his feelings for Dash, his ability to take care of the boy, and on and on. Both Jensen and Dash spend time with other littles and their Daddies and both seem comfortable with the lifestyle, and yet, more doubt arose.
I would have enjoyed the story much more without quite so much doubt on Jensen’s part. Their weak dynamic kept my appreciation of the story minimal. On a positive note, the author presented all the facets of “little play” to readers through showing both Dash and other littles playing together and by themselves. There are multiple scenes of various playtimes and snack times, including sippy cup use, and through meeting others and showing readers various couples, little play was explored and fully explained.
Those who appreciate age gap, insta-love, daddy kink, and/or angst will likely enjoy this story.
