Two months after librarian John Smith returns home to England, he contacts his lover, violin playing outdoorsman Earl Eli Rossi, regarding sightings of a giant wildcat in a rural village. He asks if the native Mainer is up for another paranormal hunt.
Earl Eli doesn't hesitate to hop on a plane to England. After a passionate reunion, the men are off to the wild again. Like Bigfoot, the giant cat might be fact or fiction. The investigation is the perfect way for John and Earl Eli to further explore the romance that began in the woods of Maine -- providing they survive an encounter with the mysterious feline.
Publisher's Note: You don't have to read Saloni's "Knock on Wood" (Love in the Wild 1) before you read On The Prowl, but you won't want to miss the first adventures of John and Earl Eli.
After British librarian John and American outdoorsman Earl Eli’s “wild” adventures in ‘Knock on Wood’ with its twists and turns and unexpected developments, I was looking forward to reading more of their escapades in this second book of the series. And I have to tell you – I was not disappointed! This story has the same feeling of mystery and “it must be paranormal” that the first one does, and the setting in a small English village as well as the “creature” they are after are just as delightfully entertaining, if not a little creepy, as their encounter with “Bigfoot” was in Maine.
John is the one who has developed a “supernatural” lead this time, but when Earl Eli joins him in England, their first thought after two whole months of separation is not exactly the planned hunt. Earl Eli admits John was more of a reason for his trip than the mysterious cat, they end up generating lots of heat between them, and John is more confident than ever that his interest in Earl Eli is mutual – never mind what his critical academic parents may think.
The hunt for the alleged giant cat is full of obstacles like the reluctant, almost hostile gamekeeper, the mysteriously vanished carcass of a sheep the cat is supposed to have mauled, and eccentric villagers they need to interview but either can’t get to tell them anything useful or can’t get them to stop talking. Then there is the interpersonal dynamic between the gamekeeper and Earl Eli that causes John to doubt himself and his feelings, a bristly vet specializing in big cats, and shots fired at… something. More than enough to keep my interest.
If you like John and Earl Eli’s adventures in cryptozoology, if you’re curious about what might be going on in the English countryside that has a whole English village, a gamekeeper, and the “lord of the manor” near said village all upset, and if you’re looking for a read where a tantalizing mystery interweaves with two men figuring out their future, then you will probably like this novella.
