Pelo is a troubled man whose mixed ancestry of Hawaiian and Filipino has always made him feel like he has no place in either culture. He’s back home on the Big Island of Hawaii after serving time for manslaughter—a crime he did not commit. And now, a chance encounter with a newly widowed Filipina turns Pelo's life upside down.
From helping her family undertake the huge preparations necessary for a traditional Filipino funeral to finding a new chance at love with the woman’s sexy and passionate son, Adan, Pelo finds he might finally have a chance for strong roots. On the single biggest festival day in the islands, King Kamehameha Day, will Pelo find his heart?
First edition published by eXtasy Books under the title 'Pelo's Heart', June 2009.
Second edition published by Amber Allure in June 2014.
The Big Island of Hawaii is the setting for a hot adventure with lots of loving, cross-cultural exchanges, and the celebration of King Kamehameha’s birthday on June 11. The local flavor is wonderful, and since the main character, Pelo, is of mixed ancestry, I got to see some Filipino traditions as well as a few Hawaiian ones. It made for some fun reading, especially since Pelo has a lot of catching up to do after three years in prison for manslaughter he did not commit.
Pelo is finally free and trying hard to rebuild his life. But he finds that his father has passed away, the house has been sold, and things are different from what he remembers. When he ends up helping his father’s Filipino neighbor deal with her husband’s death, he finds some new friends and a purpose. It is the neighbor’s son, Adan, who ends up being exactly whom Pelo needed – and watching the two get to know each other and deal with some of the Filipino and Hawaiian customs was entertaining as well as interesting.
If you like your romances on the scorching side of hot, if mixed cultures are your thing, and if you’re looking for a read with a lot of local flavor, then you will probably like this short story.
