When Quinn Hart’s best friend died, he became guardian to the man’s ten-year- old son, Noah Stone. So far, Quinn has been able to conceal the growing attraction he feels for Noah, but now Noah is twenty-two and returning home from college. Honor still holds Quinn back from revealing his true feelings. Their community of bear shifters consider reproduction a priority, and Quinn fears they would never accept a homosexual relationship.
Noah has always hidden his romantic feelings for his guardian, but now he’s a man, and his desire is stronger than ever. Unable to handle his feelings, Noah leaves Oregon for a position in a research facility. But when Noah arrives in New York, he discovers his employer is harvesting bear bile and he’s the new source.
Quinn is determined to find Noah. But can he admit what he really wants before it’s too late?
At the center of this story are two men (or rather, two bearshifters) who have hidden their feelings for years and can’t seem to get rid of them – despite the fact that Noah is now an adult and Quinn is no longer his guardian. I can see how a forbidden love like that can leave residual fear behind, even though the issue is long gone. But when Noah and Quinn try so hard to ignore their feelings, to the point where Noah runs away and ends up in a dangerous situation, I also can’t help but think they should probably discuss the situation and find a solution.
Noah has spent four years in college, not just getting an education but trying to forget his feelings for Quinn. It didn’t help – and when he is supposed to move home after college and knows he will have to face the man he thinks he can’t have on a daily basis, he decides that there is no way he can do it. So he leaves – but the situation he ends up in is really dangerous and he will need help if he is ever going to get out of it alive.
Quinn has been trying to ignore the fact that he has fallen in love with Noah – and having been the adult in the relationship for longer than Noah, I can only imagine the anguish Quinn is feeling. On top of that everyone expects him to marry a woman and produce little baby bearshifters. Quinn just sees no way out of his dilemma. But then Noah needs his help and all bets are off…
What begins as a story about forbidden love, quickly morphs into an action adventure with very high stakes. Quinn and his group of bearshifters have found peace in an abandoned timber town called Sanctuary, but hunters are still out there and, sooner or later, will endanger everyone if they are not stopped. And that is anything but easy! The idea of making the bears conservationists was a nice touch, and a few secondary characters are waiting for their own story, so I’d call this a successful start to a new series.
If you like your romances super hot, if bearshifters running from fate are your thing, and if you’re looking for a read that is short, entertaining, and suspenseful enough to make you turn the pages, then you will probably like this novella.
