My mornings used to start with the ringing of my alarm clock, closely followed by the arrival of a ghostly sexual predator, but things had changed in the last month and a half. These days the predator proceeded the alarm.
R.J. takes the new ghost hunter to a hospital, where patrons are being haunted by a sadistic ex-nurse. She’s easy to find but proves difficult to subdue. Can they satisfy her before things get dangerous?
This third book in the series was curious, thought provoking, and tough. Both the primary characters and the ghost, too, displayed some really hard edges, tempers, and for one of them tears. Yet, anger and disappointment has added a very humanizing quality to the recurring people. It is nervy, but within the context of the preeminent theme realistic. I found on balance that the third book provided a galvanizing element that will be most interesting to follow in the upcoming volumes. On balance, I think this book does stand on its own, however, it would be helpful to read the two previous publications in this series. Do give this short story a look-see!
R.J. is a complicated woman. Her sexual needs and habits cover an incredibly full spectrum of possibilities. Her most extraordinary talent is how she clues in to the ghost encounters so the ghost in question can be comfortably helped to leave the mortal plane. That is a flat out mystery to her associate and me, too. She seems so in tune and sensitive to whatever vibes she was probably taught to recognize, that it is clear one has to pay close attention to her. What isn't a question is how impressive and formidable R.J.'s presence is no matter what the situation. A most atypical quality that is given some extra airtime is R.J.'s complete comfort level when she is totally naked. Women by and large are not that casual and/or laid-back about being on public display au naturel. This is just R.J. being astounding once again!
I have chuckled about the fact that R.J.'s current assistant seems to have no official name. Anyway, as best as I could record up to and including this book, R.J. has called her nameless companion: grasshopper, jackrabbit, cupcake, sweetmeat, sodapop, and Donna Troy to R.J.'s wonder woman. I like grasshopper since it was used in the television show called Kung Fu. So, she will be grasshopper for me until her real name makes an appearance, if it does in later books. Anyway, grasshopper has an exceptionally hard time in this ghost hunting escapade. I was able to commiserate with her a bit, but she kind of brings situations down on her head. However, she has a strong sense of survival that is quite impressive. Still, she may leap before she looks a jot too often. Since she has a pretty good sense of commitment, that makes her okay in my book. In fact, I like her!
On balance this book in the series certainly got my attention with all the heavy duty emotion and anger being tossed about. So, I am a bit eager to get to the next story to see what is shaking there. I was not put off even when I needed to substitute a double shot of whiskey for my tall cool, icy drink. Nevertheless, be prepared for the ghost encounter in this story to be rather different than the earlier books. Well, as Ralph Waldo Emerson said, a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds!
