On a solo road trip home from college, Ben wakes up to find his car stolen, with him still lying in the backseat. Driving his car are two redneck brothers on the run from the police; Randall - a terrifying thug with a gun, and his little brother Murphy - a sinfully beautiful man with the bluest eyes Ben's ever seen.
Being captured by a killer wasn't part of Ben's plan. Nor was falling for Murphy. His tough exterior hides someone sweet, vulnerable, and dangerously sexy. But this redneck can't be gay, can he?
Tied to Murphy with his wrists bound, forced to share a motel room and even a bed night after night, Ben's not sure he wants to escape anymore. He and Murphy slowly turn from enemies to secret lovers. Secret being the operative word. If Randall finds out he'll kill them both.
But it's hard for Ben to keep quiet when he's having the most amazing sex of his life with the man who might just be his one true love.
Waking up on the backseat of your car to discover you’ve been hijacked by two wannabe gangsters might be the stuff of nightmares, but it certainly makes for an explosive opening to this novel. Laura Gomez pulled me right into the midst of the action from the first sentence and kept me there until the end. Much of this had to do with the fact that Ben is such a sympathetic hero. His zest for life and air of wholesome innocence captured my heart from the outset, so that I identified with his roller coaster of emotions as if I were going through everything alongside him.
Ben yearns for excitement. Though he adores his parents and is happy enough at the prospect of taking up his position in the family business, he can’t help wanting to escape reality, if only for a while. So, upon graduating college, Ben refuses his parents’ offer of a plane ticket in favor of a solo road trip home. He hopes for adventure, an experience that will add some spice to his future. What he didn’t count on, however, was that he would be abducted by a pair of redneck brothers on the run from the law.
Randall, the older of the two, has a gun and a vicious temper liable to blow up at the slightest provocation, but, to Ben, it’s immediately obvious Murphy is different. Beneath the loyalty to his big brother lies an unexpected gentleness and compassion. Despite the constant threat of danger, Ben finds himself drawn every bit as much to Murphy’s genuine kindness as to his beautiful eyes. As the two young men grow closer, thrown together by the intimacy of their situation, Ben begins to pray not merely for his own survival, but that he will somehow succeed in saving Murphy too.
‘Northwest of Normal’ weaves the story of two young men from vastly different backgrounds, who fall in love in the most unlikely circumstances. Admittedly, there were times during the first few chapters when I had to suspend my disbelief. I can’t help thinking that, if I had just been kidnapped, I’d be too busy fearing for my life to notice the drop-dead sexiness of one of my captors. That said, I adored both Ben and Murphy, and the sensual development of their relationship held me riveted throughout. All in all, a thoroughly engrossing read.
