Book Blurb

Understaffed, overworked, and generally exhausted contractor Ricci DeAngelo still has to contend with a long subway ride at the end of each day. The last thing he expects is to fall head long into a relationship while dozing on the train. But that’s exactly what happens when a sexy and equally exhausted stranger falls asleep on his shoulder one night.

Ricci’s nap partner ends up being Layton Callis, an equally overworked pâtissier who looks and smells good enough to eat. When they unexpectedly fall into a routine of napping together on the late train, Ricci finds himself in a unique position. He can continue only seeing Layton during the week and spending his weekends in a sleepless mess. Or Ricci can step up and see if he can get Layton to agree to wake up next to him on a more permanent basis.

Book Review

There are so many different ways romantically involved people can meet, it's not surprising there are thousand of stories (if not more) out there with exactly this topic. 'Next to You' is definitely not just a fascinating tale, but a very unusual one. How often have you sat next to someone in a subway or train, and they could have been your ideal partner? But we're not used to talking to strangers, so many, many opportunities just slip away unnoticed.

Not in this story though: Ricci and Layton connect – if only in sleep - and things develop from there. The idea made me smile. I mean, come on. How likely is it for two lovers to meet this way? But this story charmed me with the gentle, hesitant steps both characters take, with how well they fit together, and with the heat that develops once they decide to take things out of the public train and into Ricci's home and bedroom. A lot more than "sleeping together" (in the literal sense), I can tell you that much!

If you like stories that contain an unusual way for the main characters to meet, if you appreciate a soft, slow, and almost tender approach to a budding relationship, and if you still want the heat to flare between the men once they mutually agree to take things further, then you will probably enjoy this short story.
