Fredric has found his mate, but he’s completely perplexed. His mate is not only a man, but also a half-demon. Fredric cannot believe the gods have done this to him. On top of this odd turn of events, Fredric is suffering from the Dissolution, a vampire disease with no cure. He knows accepting Satoru as his mate and taking his blood increases his chances of survival, yet he keeps fighting his fate, even as Satoru becomes more appealing with each encounter.

Satoru refuses to give up, and with each passing day, Fredric becomes less resistant. Fredric first agrees to drink Satoru’s blood, and then he accepts Satoru as a lover. But as time runs out and other troubles come, will Satoru be able to save his lover’s life and truly win his heart?

Book Review

This third installment of the "fantasy vampire" world with a feudal structure where vampires hold the power, demons are despised, and priests are the last defense against evil, tells the story of the third vampire prince, Fredric, and Satoru, a half-demon human priest. They are so clearly destined to be together, they should fall into each other's arms and be done with it. Unfortunately, that isn’t the way it works for them. Fredric is resolute not to bond with a demon, as he hates them with a passion, and besides, he wants a female mate so he can have children. Satoru is more stubborn than should be allowed, but he will need every ounce of determination he can dig up if he wants to make sure Fate has a chance despite Fredric's objections. Their basic conflict of opposing world views was already set up at the end of the previous book, but it comes into full bloom in this volume. Hold onto your hats, this is one wild ride!

Fredric is a very hard nut to crack. All he can think of are all the reasons he doesn’t want to love Satoru. He can feel the pull, the need to be with him, but he cruelly ignores it. Even when he realizes Satoru's blood is what can heal his illness, he still pushes him away. And when Satoru tells him he is in love, Fredric denies him any sort of intimacy. At first. I loved how all his emotional walls slowly crumbled, how he found out it was harder to resists love than he thought, and even though he only gives in physically, at first, emotional surrender isn’t far off.

Satoru has the patience of a saint and the determination of three men. He also knows he loves Fredric, and is such a giving soul that he continues to love his mate even though Fredric tells him he'll never reciprocate. When disaster hits, in the form of Satoru's demon father revealing some truly nefarious plans, Satoru is rendered almost helpless by the demon's magic. Satoru will need every ounce of fighting spirit and love for Frederic to make it out of this trap!

This third book of the series is a mix between the very emotional love story in the first volume, and the much bloodier proceedings in the second. The initial total confrontation between Fredric and Satoru provides a built-in conflict for them to overcome, followed straight away with a test of their love - even though Fredric still denies his feelings for a long time. It makes for an explosive mix full of passion and adventure.

If you like stories about slightly different vampires, if you enjoy one male fighting to deny his feelings while the other just loves him anyway, and if you're looking for a story full of passion and an intense battle against an evil demon, then you will probably like this short story.
