Book Review

The scenario of a ‘civilized’ city dome, detached from the jungle and world around it, may not be new, but the way this story is written definitely adds a fresh angle. Set in the distant future, the city controls its inhabitants ruthlessly (think 1984) – except for a few rebels. I loved the world building; Raine’s talent is an unusual one and intrigued me, the addition of a mysterious Outside race made me curious, and the secondary characters were interesting.

Raine has always been different, his talent setting him apart in a world where not falling within the norm can be deadly. Inevitably, he gets caught and I loved how determined he was to survive under even the most cruel conditions. His courage is amazing and the way he deals with ‘the Beast’ may have been instinct, not strategy, but it worked. The subsequent adventures kept me turning the pages and I found myself holding my breath more than once.

Ash can’t remember where he is from or what happened to him, but he knows two things: he will find the person who betrayed him and got him into the city’s clutches, and, he will recognize his mate when he meets him. He is, in many ways, the typical alpha hero, and he has a lot to learn where his mate and having a relationship is concerned. I liked him a lot; he’s got the right mix of protective strength and emotional vulnerability to be the ideal partner for Raine.

The contrast between roughly the first half of the book (which takes place in the city) and the second half was fascinating. Culture versus nature in its most basic form, the addition of Raine’s and Ash’s feelings about their situation and their growing feelings for each other was fascinating. The secondary characters will have interesting stories to tell as well, so I certainly hope there will be a second volume – and fast! If you like sci-fi with a few paranormal elements, if societies in new and strange world interest you and if a strong mate bond which helps characters grow and develop together is your thing, you will probably like this book as much as I did.
