Bartender-extraordinaire Amy Thompson loves her job at Sappho’s Kiss, but grows weary of the party lifestyle she lives. A decade has passed since she’d taken her life into her own hands and said enough was enough. That didn’t mean a lifetime of programming changed overnight and concealing her pain from others was a habit she held to with a steely, white-knuckled grip. That is until she caught sight of big, azure eyes across a coffee shop.
Psychologist Maya Chamberlain tells herself she's content with her life since she was widowed years before. The same crash that took her husband left her with a limp and a loathed cane. She loves her job at the LGBT Youth Center in Colton, Maine’s Pride District until an over-sized, blonde ego plops down across from her in Pink’s Diner.
Can two women who hide what they desire from the rest of the world find freedom and acceptance in each other’s arms?
The two leading women in this story are remarkable, creating a mesmerizing story. They each have significant challenges that they need to deal with every day. When they eventually test the waters of coupledom they are lovingly sensitive and sexually excited by each other. At least from my perspective, some of the stressful and powerful fundamental forces swirling through their beings are doubtlessly not common run of the mill conundrums, although one's sexual preference is certainly a more prevalent current question that some need to come to terms with. Their life stories on a personal level and as a twosome presented a series of fascinating questions, obstacles that needed to be leveled with a comfortable measure of compromise providing space and warmth for a loving partnership to evolve. I definitely recommend this novella. Hang on for one amazing ride!
Amy Thompson is a towering former male football star from her high school days and then a basketball star at college with commensurate skills that now also match her lanky tall stature. Born into a male body and named Robert, she knew early on that she was female. At twenty-two she became Amy and Robert passed into oblivion. Ten years later, at thirty-two after hormone treatments and a few surgeries, she feels comfortable and at home in her body. Apparently during the transition, she also acquired an attitude that generates all manner of curious reactions. Amy's best friend Marley is one of the few people who is clued in to the real Amy. Amy resides and works in the Pride District of Colton, Maine, and it is a refreshingly and fairly safe neighborhood where the entertainingly diverse non-standard folks can live their lives in relative comfort and security. Amy is amazing, sometimes totally entertaining, and closer to her real self than she ever was as a young man. She knocks my socks off!
Currently, Maya Chamberlain is following her inner yearnings while completely upsetting her parents. After losing the husband her parents selected for Maya in a devastating automobile crash that also caused some serious physical injuries for her, her heart's passions are finally getting some air time. Initially, she is living with her grandmother who appears to be remarkably open, is forward-thinking, and has a huge heart. The grandma is a hoot and has been through life's many intricacies, variations, and permutations, so in essence, she knows the score from all life's many angles. When Maya runs into Amy early on, Amy puts a really sweet move on Maya, in my estimation, that nevertheless totally ruffles her feathers on innumerable levels. This is a super delightful opening encounter in particular because it presents both women with their most comfortable personas protectively up front. Maya really hasn't had an opportunity to be exposed to the world without the layers and layers of conditioning inflicted upon her by her parents. She is about to have her life as she knows it turned totally upside down. Intriguing!
This book feels like something I have never read before, challenging and pleasing me both in equal measure. I most unquestionably advocate that it not be missed as it is a profound and extraordinary experience. Bravo!
