Travel agent Jarrett Joynson won’t let his cheating boyfriend spoil his dream vacation, but being alone in Hawaii is more difficult than he imagined. When his attempts to catch a new lover fail, he turns to his Wiccan faith to ask the moon for guidance.
Shark shape-shifter Kainalu Enakai is in a similar position. His last relationship fell apart because he couldn’t share the truth with his boyfriend. Now Kainalu is on the prowl, looking for a new distraction.
When the moon draws Jarrett and Kainalu together, sparks fly. But the old scars on both their hearts cause trouble between them. If they cannot learn to trust each other, it will put not only their relationship in danger, but possibly Jarrett’s life.
A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2016 Daily Dose package “A Walk on the Wild Side”.
Some shifters seem to get more attention from authors than others, and while predators who live on land appear fairly frequently, predators of the sea do not. This is why I was very intrigued when I found out that the shifter half of the couple in ‘More Fish in the Sea’ is a shark shifter. Sharks have got a dreadful reputation among many people today, but shark gods, and shark people who can take both human and shark form exist in Hawaiian (and Australian Aboriginal, Indonesian, some Native American, and Greek) mythology and legends. That is where this story picks up – and I loved both the idea and the way Fil Preis wrote the tale.
Jarrett is a travel agent who never went to any of the places he sent his clients to on a regular basis. But he always wanted to visit Hawaii, so he goes even though he has to face the trip alone thanks to a recent breakup. He loves the nature (who wouldn’t!) and the sights, but he misses having someone to share it all with. When he meets Kainalu, Jarrett can hardly believe someone so gorgeous could be interested in him, but he jumps in with both feet. And where his ex made him feel small and unaccepted, Kainalu is totally different.
Kainalu is a shark shifter, and very lonely because of it. At first this is because he liked to have different partners, but when he is ready to settle down and doesn’t feel safe telling his ex the truth about his nature, Kainalu is crushed. When he meets Jarrett on the moonlit beach, he can’t believe how close he feels to him already. And somehow Kainalu knows Jarrett might be different. Then his resolution never to tell a human he is a shifter is put to the test when Jarrett’s life is threatened, and suddenly keeping secrets seems far less important than it used to be.
If you like stories about shifters who very rarely make an appearance, if you want to see how two wounded men meet and figure out how to trust again, and if you’re looking for a read that is emotional, set in beautiful Hawaii, and rooted in ancient mythology, then you will probably like this novella.
