Book Blurb

Casey resigned himself long ago to wearing a monkey suit and playing piano in swanky hotels and bars. It’s work, even if it isn’t the big break he always dreamed of. No, his ex-lover Derek got that: the record deal, big Nashville house, sold-out tour. When Derek comes back to Austin, though, he wants Casey, not all the trappings of fame. Can he make Casey believe it, or is their song played out?

Book Review

This is a wonderful story about a reunion between a man who resigned himself to staying behind and his former lover, who "made it" in the music world. Both main characters have made mistakes in the past, but admitting they're better off together from now on isn't easy – the trust they used to share is completely gone and it takes some time for them to remember what it used to be like between them and why it might be worth the risk to try again.

Casey likes to focus on the practical. He earns his living the hard way, playing the piano in expensive hotels as he dresses up in a "monkey suit". It is no longer about the music for him, not really, and he isn't even recognized for his efforts by the people ho listen to him. The air of resignation and lack of dreams is palpable around him and reading about his thoughts at the beginning of the story is very depressing. That changes as soon as Derek walks back into his life, but I cold feel how he doesn't want to risk believing anything Derek says for fear of being disappointed yet again.

Derek is the one who a contract in Nashville, he moved away and had a big career. The only thing he wants is to get back to Casey, and back to the music they used to love together.  Just goes to show a huge career and lots of money do not necessarily bring happiness if the one person you want to share it all with isn’t with you. Derek faces an uphill battle with Casey, but his determination jumped off the pages.

If you like reunions, if you enjoy reading about men who belong together but take a while to understand that, and if you're looking for a short read with lots of emotion and some very hot makeup sex, then you will probably like this short story.
