Double, double, toil and trouble...

That sums up Dolan's immediate circumstances. Trapped in an escape pod with his mate’s future dependent on him, anger and the need to find Zian drive Dolan to escape, but time is against him.

Zian's own toil and trouble simply doubles. Then triples. Betrayal seems present at every turn. How can he solve problems he simply doesn't understand?

Everyone is in for their own kind of surprise. Will Dolan's rescue bring the couple together or will it separate Dolan and Zian for good and signal doom for the Molten race?

Book Review

This return to the Molten world was as fascinating as the first two visits. Just to recap, the aliens in this series of stories are amazing, metal-based changelings with a few extra abilities. We've learned a lot about the "Molten", or Xniquil species in books one and two, and this third volume answers most of the questions I still had. It also provides a very satisfying conclusion to the relationship between the Xniquil Zian and the human Dolan, and left me with food for thought about the future of both races, now that they have met and interacted.

Dolan has come far since he was sent to space station Parkeet as punishment for translating the insults of one negotiating faction to the other. When he first ran into Zian he had no idea what do with him, but one thing was certain: Zian is a sentient being and needs to be set free. The love he felt for Zian then is nothing compared to the depth of feeling he has for his lover now, and he is determined to overcome all of the seemingly impossible obstacles put in his path. I loved the merging between him and Zian, both emotional and physical.

Zian has come equally far. It wasn't easy for him to learn to understand "solid beings", and some of has questions and issues are funny for us, and show what a truly unusual alien mindset can be like. He needs to save the Molten babies, but he also wants his lover back. As the final hurdle to being mated with Dolan, he has to learn what a human family is like. Dolan's relatives would drive anyone crazy, so I admired Zian for dealing with them relatively well.

If you've been waiting for the conclusion to this very imaginative story, if you enjoy reading about interspecies physical relationships, and if you're looking for a read that is as hot as it is creative and adventurous, then you will probably like this novella as much as I did. I definitely recommend it for any science fiction fan who is interested in aliens, their cultures and beliefs (or what we imagine they might be), and alien-human relationships.
