~Colorado's majestic scenery and creative community may be perfect for finding love, but life can change anywhere.~
Graham and Patrick raised a beautiful daughter together, then watched her take flight. But somehow in the aftermath, they lost their way. Now Patrick lives in Denver where he has his art studio, and Graham has been living his own solitary life in the home they built together.
If one didn't count the constant ache of loss, the loneliness, and broken hearts, it was the perfect arrangement. But this year, Christmas holds the promise of a happy event that will bring Patrick and Graham a new kind of bliss...together.
Can the magic of Loveland, the joy of the holiday season, and a special delivery mend the hurting hearts of two men and set them on the path to renewed love?
"Darling, my unforgettable precious [prince], please come back to me as I am sure our previous distance can be bridged; otherwise our great love could be forgotten and our eager hearts might become accustomed to disuse." ~ Aaron Ben-Zeév Ph.D. (In the Name of Love )
Graham is about to be a grandfather. His 'little girl', Terri whom he and his now ex adopted at two years old, is pregnant with twins. The birth isn't going as well as planned, so Terri is in the hospital on bed rest. Graham goes to the hospital to check on Terri although she insists everything is okay.
Graham is concerned about Terri, but is proud of her for being such a determined, independent woman. Graham loves Terri so much it hurts but being a parent is one of his crowning achievements. Graham thinks of another person whom he still loves even though they are not together, Patrick, his ex and also Terri's father. Graham doesn't know if he can bear to see Patrick, since the mere mention of his name causes him so much anxiety, but Graham knows it's inevitable when their daughter is about to deliver their grandchildren. The idea of being a grandfather thrills and frightens him to no end. Graham hopes that the joy of the situation will override the pain in his heart about not being with Patrick any longer.
When Graham runs into Patrick at the hospital, all his resolve of self-control melts with the sound of Patrick that he has missed so much and he promptly drops the special ice cream he was bringing to Terri. As he fights for control, Terri offers to help him. Graham's reaction isn't exactly civil, but he immediately apologizes. Patrick seems to understand why Graham feels the way he does. He misses Graham just as much. Their situation is far from resolved. As they fight for civility, Terri's situation becomes more urgent giving them a united purpose, to hope the babies will be delivered safely. Their proximity brings back lots of good memories of when they were young, raising a strong-willed, intelligent little girl who was fearless. Graham wishes with all his heart that they were still together. He's tried to beat down the feeling, but even after almost a year apart, Graham still misses Patrick every day and wishes that things were different. But Graham believes that Patrick has moved on and getting back together is just a dream.
There is a lot of angst in this story but there's also a lot of hope. Terri is a strong character with a lot of influence over her two fathers but she uses it sparingly. She has the advantage of knowing what both of them are thinking and feeling. More than anything, Terri wants to have her family, including both grandpas, back together again. Reuniting is not an easy process, but when circumstances are similar to Graham and Patrick's, where they just grew apart, chances for success are high. Thanks, K-Lee, for the endearing story of love, hope, and redemption.
