Book Blurb

US Marshal Julian Harrison is taking a much-needed vacation in the south, one of those all-expenses-paid trips where all you do is drink fancy cocktails and tan in the sun. Unfortunately, his vacation is cut short when two marshals show up.

It’s an important case, guarding another US marshal, who has blown the whistle on some men he worked with. One of them is still at large and was his superior. Julian is not happy about losing his vacation time, but he's even more unhappy when he is told the name of the marshal.

Victor Reeves went through marshal training with Julian, and they were not friends. In fact, Victor made it a point to compete with Julian on every activity. Julian suggests they send someone else to watch over Victor, but apparently, Victor personally requested him. But why?

Book Review

Talk about opposites needing to cooperate – the theme of this series – to the power of pick-a-very-high-number. None of the pairings have been easy in these action-packed thriller/mysteries, but Julian and Victor make the others seem like rank beginners in the arena of enemies-to-lovers. They have disliked (and I am being polite here) each other since they went through US Marshal training together, and the stakes are super high since Victor’s mentor is a crooked marshal who is out to prevent Victor from being a witness in the case against him – at any cost. I couldn’t wait to find out more!

Julian is hilarious, snarky, and super sarcastic. And that is just for starters. His irreverent sense of humor had me liking him from page one, I felt for him having his first vacation in forever so rudely interrupted, and his attempts to get out of an assignment he was not looking forward to were pretty funny. They were also utterly ineffective, and once he understands what is behind him being assigned to protect Victor, his professionalism becomes more important than his personal preferences.

Victor may not like Julian (or so Julian believes), but he respects him enough to ask for his protection as a condition to becoming a witness in the case involving weapons smuggling. It was fascinating to hear his side of the back story, and not surprisingly, it is not all as Julian remembers it. Victor is about the only honest marshal left among his colleagues, and the more details are revealed about the reasons for him needing protection, the more hair-raising the case becomes.

Julian and Victor have history, and it’s not good. Yes, both of them are competitive and ambitious, and that alone would make them rivals. But there are a few other sore points between them as well, and it takes them a while to overcome them. If not for the sizzling attraction – not that either of them wants to give in first – they might still be fighting even now. That might also have gotten them both killed, so I’m definitely relieved they figured it all out.

If you like your romances sizzling hot, if enemies-to lovers is your thing, and if you’re looking for an action-packed, suspenseful thriller in the “Melting Ice Tradition” with more than one twist and turn, then you will probably like this novella. It’s one of my favorites in this series.
