A few years after the original Melting Ice story, which brought together Brian, the cop, and the legendary gang leader, Estevan (ICE), the saga continues. Estevan is grieving over the loss of Brian when he is called upon to revive his role as Ice, the formidable former leader of the Diablos.
Jake Cesar, the leader of the Miami Death Dealers, finds himself in trouble. The last person he expects to come face to face with is Ice, who seems to have come out of retirement and is holding him hostage.
First edition published by Mojocastle Press, October 2016.
Apparently, the saga of Ice (from book one of this series) is not over and the legendary undercover cop is back with a vengeance. Several MCs, Cuban crime families, and the mafia are at war to the point where major bloodshed is about to happen. Personal feuds and corruption make things worse, and all the law enforcement organizations you can think of are desperate to stop the potential disaster. And who better to help them than a legendary cop – turned MC leader – turned cop? Sending in Ice after thoroughly discrediting him as a cop is pretty much the only chance they have, no matter what Ice wants.
Ice has been through hell and back several times already. From his parents’ murder to losing Brian in a senseless incident, to being practically set up by the Feds to go undercover yet again, nothing has ever gone like Ice wanted, expected, or deserved. He always wants to do the right thing, but in this story, he gets closer to losing it and giving in to his need for revenge than ever before. It is an extremely close call up until the final chapter.
Jake has made some monumentally bad decisions, and he is now facing the consequences. He isn’t innocent by a long shot, but he also is not a through-and-through bad guy. He is in way over his head, but when Ice is there to offer a way out, he falls for not just the plan, but for Ice himself. It is a risky undertaking, as Jake soon finds out since Brian is still very much present in Ice’s thoughts and heart. But Jake can’t help but fall for the inscrutable biker-cop…
The story is action-packed, violent, and ties up a lot of loose ends from book one. None of them were “urgent” or even very visible, but this second look at Ice’s life deepened his character and showed me how close to the edge he has to come if he wants a final chance to heal. Not that he is even looking for that, but in the end, I was glad I got to witness it. I have to admit that I was very angry about the fact that D.J. Manly “killed” Brian, the cop Ice fell in love with – I mean, they were supposed to have a happy ending! It made me hesitate to read this book, but in the end, life sometimes is like that, and while I was not looking forward to watching Ice deal with his loss, in the end, I was too curious not to read this novel to find out what Fate (aka the author) has in store for him.
If you like your romances with a hard edge, if men who battle the evil in their own souls as much as they go after the criminals they hunt, and if you’re looking for a read full of action, suspense, and passion, then you will probably like this novel.
