Erin Swanson is the son of a powerful man, and his father is out to exterminate all shifters off the face of the earth. He's a hard man, but everyone knows he loves his son, which is why Damon Slaughter, so named because of all the kills under his belt, targets Erin for revenge and makes Erin his mate.
The plan was simple. Damon wouldn't fall in love. That should have been easy, considering how weak the whelp was that he took. Erin is small, hardly befitting of the son of a tyrant. But something in his spirit, in the way Erin doesn't lay down and die, in how hard he works, calls to Damon in a primal way he hasn't felt in years.
Damon is falling in love, which is bad timing when people in his pack, who are unhappy with this mating, choose to take matters into their own hands and dispose of Erin once and for all.
A new series by Marcy Jacks is definitely something to get excited about. I read the description and was hooked! I love my paranormal shifter stories and I liked the idea of Erin and Damon working through their issues and learning to love one another while fighting against Erin's father. I had a feeling, even before I started reading, that dear old dad would probably be around for a while.
The author has created a world where shifters hate humans mainly because of all the hell the humans have put them through. Victor Swanson, Erin's father, as the security general for the New United World Nation, second only to the president of the world, has made it his mission to eradicate all shifters. Damon Slaughter is alpha of the Slaughter pack and his plan is to kidnap Erin, bite him, which mates them together and leaves Erin unable to resist Damon, and then use Erin against his father. As plans go it's a good one, except Damon didn't expect to respect Erin or develop feelings for him.
"The alpha was putting the bite on him, scarring him, injecting him with the hormones that would make him…that would make him want…
He remembered how an alpha drinking the blood of the person he was biting would signal something in the alpha’s brain, as well. It also put something inside the alpha. Erin would have the bite mark, and the alpha would share the blood of his new mate."
Damon's pack is two thousand strong and located in an area far from humans and next to impossible to reach. Humans would kill them and/or enslave them if they had the chance. There are a few humans in the pack but they are prisoners of war and are slaves in the pack. Erin might be human but as mate to the alpha he will be the highest ranking human in the pack. Granted, every shifter in the pack despises Erin because he's human and the son of their most feared enemy. No matter how strong of a hold Damon has over his pack, it was a guarantee that something eventually would happen.
I really liked the world building the author did along with the romantic storyline. I did not, however, like the ending as I felt it was too abrupt. Although Damon and Erin still have issues to work out, and Erin's dad didn't make an appearance, so I'm hoping the next book will focus on these two again. Overall, a very enjoyable read.
