Something in Fairhaven stinks. Other than the mutton stew, that is.
Gwen thought life after being a virgin sacrifice would be a bed of roses.
Bodhi was just looking for a wench to bed.
Neither less-than-dashing hero nor not-quite-so-pure maiden imagined they would meet again, much less be trapped together in a city the likes of the ill-named Fairhaven. There’s a killer on the loose. Fairhaven’s on lockdown, its citizens fearful for their lives. The local guards are corrupt. And, Bodhi’s been accused of murder…
This is the very fine sequel to ‘My Fair Maiden’, bringing two of the main characters from the opening book front and center once again. Plus, I got to learn a new word...malodorous. This is quite apt, because there really is something quite foul smelling in Fairhaven. Plus, there is a murderer on the loose. Between the dark alleys, the overflowing taverns, and the *beast* afoot in Fairhaven, this isn't the friendliest place to be in at the moment. However, the action is quite engaging; I recommend this. Good show!
Gwen had to strike out on her own, which was not standard for a young woman in this medieval time. She runs into all manner of bad luck, but she does manage to get herself inside the walls of Fairhaven, out from under the lecherous clutches of the sarge, and past the super penetrating stare of the new commander of the guard. She ends up having to wait tables at a low rent tavern in a very skimpy outfit just to have a bed all to herself. At least it is warm inside. Minor victory! Gwen also discovers that Bodhi, her savior from the ogre back at her home settlement, is drinking up a storm in the tavern where she is waitressing. Bodhi looks quite intoxicated not only due to the brews she has consumed, but also because of the tavern whore on her lap. Gwen is getting a full-blown and rapid education of life as a tavern wench, even if she protested she was not. Working for her bed and board only! Fantastic!
The commander of the city guard is named Thorne...with a spit and polish, perfectly creased uniform along with an imposing height she definitely projects a command presence. Then, with the night marauding, murdering *beast* currently terrorizing Fairhaven, Commander Thorne sets her sights on its capture. She is also captivated by the tavern server who she believes sneaked into Fairhaven after the gates should have been closed. The commander is unquestionably a powerful presence. One does not want to get on her bad side and Gwen fears she has. The commander seems so buttoned-up, in control of her territory, and convinced she will prevail. Gwen and Bodhi should definitely need to keep their distance. Impressive!
This has a very exciting ending, a charming and sexy post-denouement, too. It isn't necessary to read ‘My Fair Maiden’ first, but it might enhance your enjoyment. Finally, I was knocked on my keister when the murderer is revealed. Touché to the author!
