In the final chapter of the exciting Last Warrior series, Lio Paikai rushes to the hospital with his lover, Kord, for the birth of his baby brother, Lono. They’re soon waylaid, however, by traffic on the Pali Highway.
Not by cars, but foot traffic. He and Kord, who once were warriors for the last king of Oahu, have intercepted an ancient procession of devotees marching down the old Pali for the Makahiki. They’re stunned to learn dark kahuna forces plan to provide a blood sacrifice for the New Year festival.
The sacrifice they have inadvertently crossed paths with is Lio’s. He must right past wrongs—or there won’t be any future for him or the man he loves.

'Makahiki' by A.J. Llewellyn is the third book in The Last Warrior' series. The story continues with Lio and his wonderful family anxiously awaiting the birth of their child, Lono. Once again, I am awestruck with the closeness of this family and how much each member gives to the whole. They have their flaws and have made mistakes in the past in one way or another, but together they are perfect, unconditional love at its best. Lio knows how blessed he is to have found his place in this loving unit and is thankful every day.
Lio realizes that his work as the "Hawaiian Superman" which stems from being a reincarnated warrior is far from done when he slips once more back in time and begins to glimpse bits and pieces of his life long ago. He draws his lover, Kord, into the past with him; as always, he and Kord struggle to make sense of what they experience, but often, the time jumps are still a huge puzzle with several major parts missing. As information, from this incarnation and the past one, is revealed to him, an increasingly large number of clues start to make sense and he realizes, more than ever, that he has to find a way to correct events that have negatively impacted him and his family. Putting things back where they belong, literally and figuratively, uncover some life-changing realizations that affect Lio and his family more than any of them could have ever have imagined; but as always, his family is there, holding him up until he can stand on his own.
Lio is such an amazing person. In this book, more than ever, Lio has to come to grips with the fact that his mother never wanted him, much less loved him. Yet, Lio's soul is so pure and his capacity for love and being loved so great, that he is able to keep his feelings of unworthiness at bay. With the loving care and support of his father and the rest of the family, he is able to share the beauty that is in his heart. Lio is a true hero. By being willing to accept the challenges that confront him with dignity and grace, his actions are important not only in his present life, but in the past and future.
I love this book as much as I did the other two and will miss sharing the daily adventures of Lio and his amazing family. Lio's story is a reminder that what happened to us in the past carries over into our present and future, so we should be mindful of our actions. It also gives us hope that mistakes made in the past can be righted if we learn from them and do our best not to repeat them. Thank you, A.J., for this amazing journey of heart and soul.
