Book Blurb

Castien, an elf mage who cannot speak except with the aid of a magical dagger, has been captured while on a mission. He is freed by his companion, the warrior elf Daeron, and returns with him to Daeron’s homeland. There they will join forces to rid the land of a Lord bent on the destruction of the elves.

Theirn, a young half-elf thief, attempts to rob Castien during his stay at an inn and is caught by the mage. Much against Theirn’s will, he is enlisted into the group of rebel elves. But as Theirn's infatuation with Castien grows, he becomes more than eager to risk treachery, betrayal, and even death on dangerous missions just to be close to the man he is growing to love.

Book Review

As supernatural adventures go, this one is pretty exciting. It’s got mages, elves, spells with various effects, and a worthy quest – that of stopping tyrants from ruling the world, one evil lord in particular, as well as a few other missions. The romance in this story is quite subtle – the “adventure” and Castien’s fight for justice always come first. There is quite a variety of characters, from friendly to evil, and magic plays a significant role, as does “sneakery”, clever thieving, and a few disguises here and there. It’s definitely an interesting world to explore, one with a rich back story and lots of details.

Castien is an elf mage with a somewhat checkered past – born as the youngest son of a lord, he never had much of a purpose, until his father’s mage discovered his talent and began to teach him. He is also a thief and good at spying, and that gets him into trouble on a regular basis. One of those occasions resulted in his inability to speak except when following a certain ritual, but it has not stopped Castien from being an effective companion.

Theirn is a half elf, a thief, and joins the group when he is caught and Castien takes pity on him. He admires Castien and risks his life more than once to prove his worth. He comes in quite handy a few times, and as his feelings grow, so do Castien’s. After a few adventures and battles, finding new allies as they go along, the ending is as happy as expected – and with definite potential for more adventures.

If you prefer your adventures with a touch of magic, if strangers becoming allies, then more is your thing, and if you’re looking for some interesting quests completed by a growing group of friends, then you will probably like this novella.
