One bite has never been a life changing decision but it is now --- to bite or not to bite that is the question.
All Lucius needs is his family. They might be a mismatched and unconventional group but they're the only "real" family he knows and wants. What Lucius doesn't need is the strange, beautiful man who arrives as a last minute dinner guest and knocks him and his wolf on his ass, literally.
Just being in the same room with the mysterious Nicu proves disastrous. Lucius knows without a doubt he doesn't need the havoc Nicu threatens to bring to his predictable, but comfortable existence. But when he stands to lose the man who is tearing his life apart, Lucius realizes he doesn't know what he needs at all.
I was lucky, really lucky, to be born into a pretty great family. Granted, we've had our moments and our disagreements, but in the end I've always known they would be there for me, no matter what. I know a lot of people don't get that type of family through birth. But, some of them make their own family with friends and loved ones. And, I'm here to tell you right now, I would pick Lucius and his misfit family any day of the week and twice in Sunday. They're a funny, loving, crazy bunch and being with them is some of the most fun I've had in a long time. This was my first introduction to a K-lee Klein story and I can assure you, it won't be the last.
Lucius is a lone wolf whose mother died at childbirth, and his father was killed by a wolf who wanted to take over his pack. When Lucius tried to get the pack elders to see this, the pack sent him away with only the clothes on his back. Ali is a white witch born of two black witches, something never before recorded. Manny's parents threw him out because he is gay, after Manny had to suffer several severe beatings, and that's a big no-no for a mountain lion. Kristof is a big, bumbling bear shifter and the newest stray that Ali brought home to their family of misfits. Lucius and Manny have been with Ali for seven years, ever since they found each other, and Ali found them. Lucius wouldn't have it any other way, and being as he's pretty opinionated, sarcastic, and very snarky, Lucius has no problem expressing himself.
So, when Lucius finds out that Ali has invited his human friends (dirty, smelly, disgusting species) to Yule dinner, Lucius is so not happy. Lucius knows that not all humans are anti-supernatural, but he still prefers to stay away from them as he's had some bad experiences. Meeting Nicu, however, throws a whole bunch of crazy physical sensations at Lucius that he hasn't got a clue how to handle. When Nicu tells him they are spirit mates, and, in fact, Lucius's own wolf insists they are mates, Lucius freaks the hell out. He doesn't do relationships. He doesn't feel these types of things. He has one-night stands and hooks ups, not a lover and certainly not a mate. Oh no. And, what the hell? Lucius sure as heck doesn't believe in soul mates or spirit mates, whatever.
In the next few days though, as Nicu becomes more and more important to Lucius and Lucius begins to accept how he is feeling, he starts to believe that Nicu is his mate. The fact that Nicu has started suffering from seizures is scaring the crap out of Lucius and he doesn't know what to do. His wolf insists say take, claim, and bite Nicu, but Lucius isn't so sure about the whole biting thing. When Nicu's bunica, grandmother, shows up from Romania, all bets are off. A tiny little old woman yelling in Romanian. Yeah, that should be relaxing. Luckily for all, Ali knows exactly how to handle her.
I do love a good shifter story, and this definitely qualifies as good. I'm thrilled that I was introduced to this 'Family of Misfits' and I so enjoyed Lucius and Nicu's story. It was wonderful watching Lucius break free of his fears and learn to love and trust Nicu. Now, I'm excited looking forward to the next book. Thank you, K-lee!
