Book Review

In typical 1Night Stand fashion, Madame Eve works her magic yet again. This time she has a pretty tough job: Thomas is a hardened contract negotiator, but he has never really known love and the one man he was interested in recently was lost to the punishment of his anti-gay countrymen in Saudi Arabia. Arjun is an Indian prostitute, born into the caste and set to remain in the cruel hands of his pimp forever. In a story that reads like a modern fairy tale, including all the features of a knight in shinning armor rescuing an abused young man, Thomas and Arjun figure out what life is all about for them from now on. 

Thomas, who has recently been fired, thinks he is down on his luck. But when he meets Arjun, his date for the night, he begins to see that he hasn’t even begun to see how hard life can be. I think in the beginning he wants to protect Arjun because he wasn't able to protect his previous lover, but as he gets to know the prostitute whom Madame Eve has arranged a date with, he realizes Arjun is his own man and deserving of protection independently of anyone else.

Arjun doesn’t expect much from life, but he does want this one night off to himself. He is curious whether physical love can ever feel good, and when his pimp almost stops him from having his date with the attractive American, Arjun fears he has lost it all. To his shock and surprise, Thomas seems to truly care abut his well-being, but he still cannot believe the man's words about freedom can be taken seriously.

If you like fairy tales with a modern slant, a lot of angst, and a high level of emotions, if you enjoy reading about a strong man swooping in to save a guy who is not only in distress, but cannot even imagine he will ever be saved, and if you're looking for a read with a flair of the exotic, then you will probably like this short story.
