Book Review

Oh my goodness, a tired and ragged ‘volunteer crew’ sent out on a search and rescue mission in the only rust bucket plane, Blue Beetle, that may be capable of flying. I had to love those Navy flying guys during this WW II story. Well, the pilot gets it in the air, but it ends in the drink to become another plane in need of a ‘search and rescue’.

First Lieutenant Andrew Mackenzie, pilot, was the masterful fellow who got the Blue Beetle in the air and managed to not drown after it went down. His navigator gets him into the only life raft they can see, after swimming with Mac in tow through shark-infested waters. Phew!

First Lieutenant Harry Glassman, navigator, is a Jewish hero and then some. These guys proclaim their love for each other and more than bond as they await their fate. What miracles can happen during the horrors of war!

Mac and Harry perform one of the most heart-warming funeral ceremonies as they prayerfully try to save Rodriguez’s soul shortly after bringing him on board their life raft. These guys give each other possibly the last loving moment in their lives in case they aren’t rescued. This short story was magnificent and once again confirms my total adoration for the grunts who time and again become heroes, lovers, and saints!
