Vance is a vampire hunter on a mission. When the Colonel sends him to clear out a bloodsucker living in the Louisiana swamps, Vance figures it's all in a day's work. The problem is that Clay is no ordinary vampire. Clay and Vance have a connection that Vance has never felt before. He knows he should be fighting Clay off, but all he wants to do is give in to the feelings Clay inspires. How is he supposed to fight something that feels so good? Clay might just be the undead man to convince Vance that not all vampires are bad, and that donating a little blood can be sexy as Hell. When things with Vance's boss go horribly wrong, Clay has to ride to the rescue, refusing to let his new love disappear.
With his human familiar, the crazy little Cajun named Remy, and the enigmatic older vampire Gryphon along for the ride, Clay tries to find Vance before it's too late. Vance is a survivor, and with Clay at his side, he plots his revenge against his former employer, a man who had much darker motives than just sending vampires to their final reward. Can Vance and Clay keep moving, stay alive, and blow the Colonel's plan out of the water?

An aura of mystery surrounds the main characters of this novel, a series of revelations about the past await the light of day, and personal relationships begin, intertwine, and deepen as four men try to figure out their destiny while hunting the bad guy. It’s a wildly adventurous and very, very hot exploration of vampire lore and the kinds of shenanigans that “bloodsuckers” and those who hunt them can get up to.
Vance is a former undercover cop with a penchant for swearing at every opportunity. He has been through hell after his cover was blown, he was tortured until he was half-dead, and ended up working for “the Colonel” who runs some sort of organization hunting vampires all over the country. Initially Vance is not exactly a fan of the supernatural. His initial description had me laughing out loud: “… these crazy bastards came armed with teeth and that weird-assed charming thing, and they were hard as fuck to take down. Damned place was crawling with them, and they were sucking people’s blood, and that was unsanitary. Besides, sucking blood was something bugs did.” But as Vance gets to know Clay and is exposed to another point of view, his perspective begins to change.
Clay is a vampire with just as foul a mouth as Vance. He is pretty old, very patient, and has a moral code all his own. His best friend is a human named Remy, a Cajun who is more than a little unusual himself. Clay is about as possessive as you’d expect a “traditional” vampire to be, and he is fiercely loyal – a trait that saves Vance in more than one way. Clay suspects more about what is going on behind the scenes than he admits to, but he also believes in everyone standing up for themselves and fighting their own battles. Unless it looks like they might lose – in which case, watch out for Clay’s wrath.
Remy, as it turns out, has a romance of his own going on, but much of that is shrouded in mystery until the last part of the book. Gryphon is an ancient vampire with a whole set of skills I didn’t expect, and he has some very definite ideas about what he wants to do to -and with – Remy once he finds him. Gryphon adds another very enjoyable layer of worldbuilding to the story, and I had great fun trying to figure him out.
If you like the kind of excitement, adventure, and fight for power the paranormal world has to offer, if you believe that personal relationships (including their physical side) can be a little more flexible than offered by traditional coupledom, and if you’re looking for a read full of testosterone-driven posturing, insidious powerplay by evil masterminds, and some extremely hot man-on-man action in all kinds of nontraditional configurations, then you will probably like this novel. I enjoyed myself as much this second time around as I did the first time I read this tale.
