Dominic Antonelli and his boyfriend Kit Thomas have been together for over four years, and Dominic thinks it's time to make things official. He plans for an elaborate proposal, including a quiet dinner for two and a romantic evening at Kit's favorite place, the local aquarium. When the weather refuses to cooperate and his car breaks down, Dominic knows the night can't get any worse. That is, until his fourteen-year-old daughter, supposedly at a friend's house to study, calls distraught and drunk.
With his night in shambles, Dominic considers throwing in the towel. After all that has happened, surely Kit wouldn't want to tie himself to their messy little family unit. But caught up in his grand plan, Dominic has forgotten there is more to being a family than a piece of paper and a circle of gold.
This story is also included in Family Time Anthology.
“Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans.” – John Lennon
That is definitely the motto for this story, and I loved it was quoted by one of the main characters in a moment when both men needed to be reminded there are worse things than the chaos they were encountering. Maybe not many, and not much worse, but still. Dominic and Kit are clearly in love, and after four years together are both ready for the next step. But then – life happens. The weather is awful making the restaurant close, then the car breaks down, and to top it all off, Dominic’s teenage daughter calls from her sleepover and needs to be picked up. It made me wonder what was next – and, quite frankly, I was expecting another disaster.
Dominic is a second grade teacher, and he likes things done a certain way. He is beginning to see control slip away from him where fourteen-year-old Kyla is concerned, but he wants his plan for the “grand proposal” to Kit to be perfect. And the plans are – perfect – except that is when life interferes.
Kit is a doctor and a lot more relaxed and realistic about many things. It is also clear that he loves Dominic deeply and definitely adores Kyla (quirks and all) as if she were his own daughter. It was good to see how he kept a cool head throughout the madness and brought everyone back down to earth. He is definitely the right partner for Dominic!
If you like couples who struggle with the messiness of real life, if you want to see how two men cope with a family and “life” on top of their relationship, and if you’re looking for a short, entertaining, and ultimately very happy read, then you will probably like this short story.
