Although Rowan Stormbringer was raised Wiccan, he’s never felt a connection to magic. That changes on the eve of Yule, when he encounters a magical creature, a phoenix, that needs his help getting to Stonehenge before the sun sets that day. Hiding a magical creature in the mortal world is tricky at best, but partnering with a good-looking, snarky taxi driver may be just the ticket Rowan needs. As they explore their instant attraction to each other, Rowan and Martin must learn to trust one another if they hope to deliver the phoenix home in time.
A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2014 Advent Calendar package "Celebrate!".
Finding a story about Yule and some of the Wiccan rituals among this year’s Advent Calendar stories at Dreamspinner was a wonderful surprise for me. Rowan’s skepticism about the magic his mother and sister are so connected to made him encountering some of it even more special. Not to mention that there is also something fascinating about a phoenix and its regenerative powers. Oh, end let’s not forget the taxi driver – he definitely added some fun to the events as well. The combination of all of the above made for wonderful reading.
Rowan is a Canadian from a family of Wiccans. He is in the UK for business, but gets stuck there just before Yule due to a huge storm and flights being cancelled. What he discovers next is fantastical – and I bet someone without his sort of background might not even have known what to do. Not that Rowan is much more certain, but at least he had heard about magical creatures from his family even though he never put much stock in those stories. But this might just be the point in his life where he changes his opinion—and he is determined to try to do right by the phoenix, no matter what it takes.
Martin, the cab driver whom Rowan asks to drive him to Stonehenge (in the middle of a storm), has even less of an idea what he is in for. His reactions were so typical, and totally skeptical, he made me laugh. I mean, he has probably picked up a lot of “crazies” in his career, but accepting a one-and-a-half to two-hour drive from a stranger is pushing it. His snark and temper are simply wonderful and added a lot of the ambiance I really liked.
If you like winter holidays with a touch of magic, if you enjoy men with a lot of attitude and snark being shown there is more to life than they might have been taught, and if you’re looking for a creative, fun, and entertaining read with lots of magic and a touch or romance, then you will probably enjoy this short story.
