Jay Tabor, rebel leader of Territory Three has done something he swore he would never do, and that’s work with Quinn, the Supreme Alpha of the Nine Territories, to save his brother Aaron’s life. Now on the run after his rebel hideout was discovered in Virginia, Jay has found a relatively safe haven for his insurgent group deep in the mountains of Tennessee. His peace is short-lived, however, when he gains a new captive—Devon, the Alpha of Territory Three.
Devon has been beaten, tortured and starved by the rebels in an effort to "tame" him, but when he's transferred to a new camp, he discovers not only kindness but an unwanted attraction to his new captor—one that goes both ways. Devon has finally found his true mate in Jay, but the man is his sworn enemy, and a dominant, controlling lover, who insists on his independence.
When they’re both kidnapped by forces bent on harming them, Jay has only one chance to save his wolf. He has to prove that Devon is his submissive partner and he has to do it in front of their enemies in order to save their lives. With only one chance to make it good, he has to put on a show or risk losing his lover and his mate forever.
The second book in this world, set thirty years after the Pestilence eradicated over 70 percent of humans and werewolves took over, is just as intense, fascinating, and suspenseful as the first. And I strongly recommend you read ‘Property of the Alpha’ before ‘Kiss of the Alpha’ – much of the world is explained in that book, and I don’t think you’ll get the full effect of this powerful sequel without those details. ‘Kiss of the Alpha’ starts right after book one ends, and shows things from Jay’s perspective. Jay is Aaron’s younger brother, and a rebel leader trying to regain freedom from the werewolves for all enslaved humans. Jay saved Aaron’s life at the end of book one, and had to relocate his camp since Aaron’s mate Quinn, the Supreme Alpha of all nine northern American territories, would not have let the rebels survive near his residence in what used to be Washington, DC.
Jay has led his group of rebels all the way from Virginia to the mountains of Tennessee. He turns out to be far more caring and conscious of human failings than I thought, and his immediate reaction to Devon’s imprisonment and treatment by other rebels, who bring him to Jay as a “gift”, is but one example. Jay doesn’t like wolves or the brutality they have shown humans since enslaving them – which is why he became a rebel - but he hates anyone who repays like with like. Seeing the results of torture on Devon makes Jay angry, and he steps in to save the prisoner.
Devon has only recently replaced Mikkail, the previous alpha of Territory Three who was a cruel bastard. Devon used to be a teacher and was trained as a leader – a program Quinn started when he realized that alphas are rare and that good leadership can be learned. Truly radical thinking for werewolves, but Devon is a fan and more than ready to begin reforms to end the suffering of humans and submissive wolves alike. If only he hadn’t been captured by rebels, he might have been able to have some real impact. Now he is confronted with Jay – a human who is his fated mate, stubborn enough for three men, and a dominant lover with a definite idea of how things should be between them. Not that Devon can ever give in without losing any and all respect for himself.
Jay and Devon are an unusual pair in more than one respect, and the relationship dynamics are fascinating. Werewolf-human matings are rare. A human who is more dominant and more suited for leadership than an alpha, as well as wanting justice for humans and wolves, has never been seen before. And a werewolf with tons of ideas for reform and a sense of justice that includes humans seems almost too good to be true. Put these two together, add a healthy dose of attraction, and you get an explosive mixture that might just be exactly what this Earth of the future needs. Not surprisingly, there are many who don’t agree with their ideas, and Jay and Devon have to face them and win before they can begin to make much-needed changes.
If you like post-apocalyptic stories with a paranormal twist, if a strong human and a somewhat submissive werewolf – who is still a wolf - appeal to you, and if you’re looking for a read full of surprising sweetness and hot, kinky bedroom activity, then you will probably like this novel. I can’t wait to get into the third installment of this series!
