Mystery writer Bethany Lange wasn’t prepared for the twisting emotions that left her breathless the moment she laid eyes on folk singer sensation Ali Hart. Of course she was flat on her back and looking up and backward at the gorgeous singer, but that didn’t stop her body and heart from bursting into a kaleidoscope of want, need, and lust. Scared at the intensity of her feelings, Bethany does everything she can to avoid Ali at Camp Jacomo, the camp designed specifically for children of lesbian and gay families where Bethany volunteers every summer. The camp director convinces the hottest singer at the moment, Ali Hart, to spend a week teaching the children music to everybody’s delight except Bethany’s. On her last day at camp, Ali approaches Bethany with an offer of friendship, but they both know it’s the prelude to something bolder. Should Bethany take the risk? Does she really believe she can balance her quiet private life with Ali’s outspoken one?
This is a magnificent love story. Two women hurt by their previous lovers and each in their own way trying to make sense out of life and times. When they meet at a gay and lesbian friendly summer camp, they both feel as if lightening has struck. This is so beautifully involving, I have already reread it twice. Amazing!
Bethany Lang is a successful, professional writer of novels. She is also still hurting from a breakup with her girlfriend from almost three years ago. She has been emotionally shut down for so long, that she is decidedly thrown for a loop by her intense attraction to a special visitor at the summer camp where she has been volunteering for many years in addition to finishing her novels. She is very adept as a writer, but her interpersonal skills are a bit uneven to say the least. On top of that, Beth has an amazingly intricate internal dialogue with two fairly famous poets and one playwright/poet vis-à-vis a well-honed slide into wonderland. I love her quirkiness. Astounding!
Ali Hart is currently an accomplished and successful singer/musician. She is on tour a good deal of the time in the summer and throughout the year, but she accepted an invitation to come to this very special summer camp for a week and share her music. She wows everyone, but jolts Beth to the max. Ali is also hurting from a breakup with her girlfriend from about three months ago. She is a genuinely polished performer, but everyone senses, most especially Beth, that the feelings she expresses up front and personal are very real. Add to that an incredibly sultry voice and I suspect almost everyone falls in love with her... I did. However, even Ali is caught off guard by the intense jolt she experiences in Beth's presence. The story of these two women is simply out of this world. Fantabulous!
There are lots of little tidbits woven throughout the book that raise the delight level above and beyond the hot and sultry love story. It was mentioned but not overly emphasized that Beth is an only child and we do not get to meet her family. However, Ali comes from a riotously pleasurable large family and it is most gratifying to spend time with them. Even Beth loosens up. I completely recommend this story from multiple viewpoints. This goes right up into my *winner* category. Supremely enjoyable!
