Emery Jones, a former hunter, wants to be part of the pack and to be with his mate, Griffin, an alpha wolfhound and the love of his life. To do that, he needs to live as a normal member of the pack and prove that he can be trusted.
Griffin loves his mate. He will do whatever it takes to keep him safe within the lodge and see to it that he gets a second chance. However, when traps are discovered on the territory after a trip outside the lodge, Emery is blamed and taken into another hearing. Griffin won't have his mate abused, but thankfully the truth comes out when another hunter is captured and Emery is needed to talk to him and calm him down.
Unfortunately, another attack is on its way and when Emery gets pulled into it, he and Griffin won't come out of the wreckage the same as when they went in.
As expected, this second part of Emery and Griffin’s story was as intense as the first. They may have gotten the worst part of Emery changing his opinion about werewolves and wolfhounds out of the way in the previous book, but Emery still has a long way to go in terms of earning the rest of the pack’s trust. And with more hunters turning up - one of them a man Emery worked with – and suspicions running high, it isn’t easy for Emery to become a member of the pack.
Now that Emery has seen the truth, he is willing to do anything so the others will accept him. Not immediately, but Emery is patient. With his former roommate a prisoner in the basement and Emery one of the few men he talks to, Emery has a reminder of what he used to be like right there. But when the next attack happens, and Joey asks for his help, Emery can’t let him run off on his own and breaks his promise to Griffin to wait for him. Griffin is elated he has finally mated Emery. His mate’s progress is good, and not even him leaving the lodge to try to protect Joey will stop Griffin from loving and supporting him.
But these two aren’t the only ones struggling. Joey and Dean finally figure out they are mates, only to have Dean vanish when looking for bear traps set by the hunters. When Joey goes after him despite Emery’s attempts to stop him, it does not end well. That is one heck of a cliffhanger, and judging by the blurb for the next story, not one that will be resolved anytime soon. I am waiting with bated breath to find out how Marcy Jacks is going to get her characters out of this particular mess!
If you like Emery and Griffin and want to know how they go from newly mated to deeply loving, if you want to find out more about the hunters and their evil plans, and if you’re looking for a read that is emotionally intense, suspenseful, contains a happy ending for Emery and Griffin, yet will leave you on the edge of your seat about Joey and Dean, then you will probably like this novella. And yes, I know the part about Joey is more hope than fact, but I can’t believe I’ve seen the last of him!
