Book Blurb

Shannon hates Christmas. Mostly because Christmas hates him. It sure seems like it, anyway: every crummy thing that’s happened to him since high school has befallen him at the Most Wonderful Time of the Year. Every humiliating break-up, every high-rise hotel fire -- heck, a few years back, one guy he had the hots for up and died.

Which goes a long way toward explaining why he’s a whimpering mess when he meets Ben the barista one Christmas morning at his neighborhood coffee house. It doesn’t completely excuse his using Ben’s T-shirt as a handkerchief -- while Ben’s still in it -- but Ben’s nothing if not a good sport.

Ben’s such a bright spot that after a while Shannon wonders if maybe his Christmas Curse hasn’t been lifted. And what better place to test this theory than at Ben’s family festivities? It’s not like Christmas is actually cursed. Is it?

Book Review

Some people hate Christmas for no reason they can point to. Some people have their reasons but will not tell anyone. And some people hate Christmas because it is cursed – at least for them. The latter is the case for Shannon, and he is at a point in his life where he actively fears the holiday and makes sure he has no boyfriend when the time comes. That and other protective measures cannot protect him from more mishaps though, but after meeting a very nice and understanding barista named Ben one Christmas morning, telling him about it and sharing the misery becomes a much-anticipated tradition.

Shannon is convinced that Christmas hates him because every time Christmas comes around since Shannon turned seventeen, an existing relationship ends or some other catastrophe happens. I have to say, looking at his history, I tend to understand why he is a whimpering mess when he sits in the café where Ben works. When he ends up blowing his nose – after an extended cry, you understand – in Ben’s T-shirt, the whole situation is so out of hand, I had to laugh. Ben’s reaction is pretty cool and ensures that the epic fail of manners develops into a wonderful relationship. Shannon still hates Christmas though. After they move in together, Ben invites him to spend their first Christmas with his family, and all seems to be going well for a while... Then, at the last moment, their first Christmas together almost turns into the worst disaster of all.

If you like some humor with your Christmas romance, if a man who thinks Christmas is cursed seems like the right guy to learn differently, and if you’re looking for a read that is filled with passion, interesting and unexpected events, and very, very funny, then you will probably like this novella as much as I do. It’s endearing and will stay with me for quite a while.
