What do you do when someone attempts to frame you for the murder of your roommate? That's the problem facing kinetic artist Trev Eldridge. Although Detective Quint Hawk determines Trev is innocent, it does nothing to assuage Trev's fears.

While Quint sets out to discover who's responsible for the murder, Trev is befriended by Dr Zack Kendall. As Zack helps Trev deal with what happened, the two men begin to bond. At the same time, artist Clay Richardson takes Trev under his wing, after learning Trev is a talented artist.

Evidence leads Quint to a theory about the murder and who is involved. With the help of Trev, Zack, Clay, and Officer Lou Hernandez, they come up with a plan to catch the villains.

With all that is happening, can the growing attraction between Trev and Zack survive before the criminals take them out of the picture...permanently?

Book Review

After enjoying ‘The Element Case’ - a very clever murder mystery and the first book in this series - quite a lot, I was looking forward to seeing more of Quint, the down-to-earth and rational police detective, and his lover Clay, the reclusive artist. Both of them have “mellowed” each other and are now quite a loving couple – but they still enjoy needling each other as much as ever, maybe more. They are joined by two new guys: kinetic artist Trev, who makes amazing mobiles and moving statues but has not been discovered yet, and medical doctor Zack, who starts out as Trev’s doctor and quickly becomes more. The mystery of who killed Trev’s roommate and why requires all of them to work together as they uncover evidence of art theft and forgery on a grand scale. It takes Clay’s knowledge of painting and Quint’s determination to catch the villains. Keeping Trev and Zack alive while they do turns out to be quite the challenge!
Trev is a kinetic artist, and he is very shy about his work. He’s been making moving art of all types for a few years and is desperately trying to find a gallery so he can sell them and make some money. Then masked men intrude in his home and murder his roommate, attempt to frame him for the crime, and shoot him for good measure. The only good thing is that he meets Zack, his doctor, and a man Trev could easily fall for.

Zack is a dedicated doctor, but staying away from Trev while he is his patient is not easy. Once Trev leaves the hospital and it becomes clear he is still under threat, Zack appoints himself Trev’s protector – a risky proposition since the villains begin to target him as well. But Zack is determined to see this through, and even volunteers to help out when Quint comes up with a plan to trap the criminals.

Trev and Zack’s romance develops slowly, but both men are definitely meant for each other. I liked that Zack defended Trev where needed, but did not stifle him or tell him what to do. Well, not much. The addition of Officer Lou Hernandez and his ability to go undercover was great, and I am looking forward to seeing more of him in the next book. This is turning out to be a great series with a set of complicated crimes centered around different types of art to keep everyone on their toes.

If you like the idea of getting to witness the process of hunting criminals out to make money by using forged art as part of their nefarious plans, if you want to know more about two men who start out as patient and doctor only to discover they want a relationship, and if you’re looking for a read with wonderful characters, interesting twists and turns in the process of solving a crime, and a suspenseful story, then you will probably like this novella.
