Robert Daniels is always dating the wrong guys. He doesn’t understand it. Then, one day, on a particularly bad date, he dies…
…only to wake up in the body of a man named Jimmy, who was shot and killed—but in 1927. Along comes Hugh Naylor, the guy Robert has been waiting for all his life. Hugh is perfect—sweet, intelligent, and sexy. The problem? Hugh is in love with Jimmy.
Now Robert’s falling in love with Hugh, but how can he explain he isn’t who he appears? How can he get Hugh to love him, and not the man whose body he inhabits? And who shot Jimmy?
Talk about shocking! Within the first few paragraphs the surprises start and they don’t let up. Following the events from the character’s point of view was great, because we know as much as he does, and that isn’t very much. As he gradually figures out what happened, the shock may lessen, but the surprises don’t stop. The blurb promises a story with a few twists and some complications, and that is exactly what you’ll get.
Rob is a modern-day gay man, trying to find a date he doesn’t actually hate, but generally unconcerned with life otherwise. When he is shot under mysterious circumstances and wakes up in the past, he is shocked. I loved how he not only has a different body to deal with (he is now ‘Jimmy’ who was a bit of a rogue), but also gradually discovers all the differences between his time and the Kansas City of 1927. The historical details were nicely woven into the story and I really enjoyed reading about them. Rob/Jimmy’s dilemma of falling for Hugh but not feeling ‘entitled’ to it because he isn’t who Hugh thinks he is (confused yet?) was very touching but I did keep thinking “get on with it; you’re stuck in the past, clearly, make the most of it”.
Hugh – poor Hugh. He is devoted to Jimmy, despite the fact that the man has treated him really badly. Hugh doesn’t think anything can ever come of it, but he still does everything he can to help Jimmy recover from his ordeal; Jimmy, too, was shot – in his own time in 1927. Hugh is caring, kind, and totally in love. He is also the one who finally makes Jimmy/Rob see sense. And once he takes over? He may just surprise you.
If you’re up for a great historical romp, a few temporal twists that add some mystery to the story, and if you enjoy watching two men fall for each other, then you will probably like this novella.
