Book Review

An old haunted inn that has stood empty for years, two men with diametrically opposed reasons for wanting to buy it, and a very spooky first meeting on Halloween are the ingredients for this delightful novella. The tone of the newspaper ad that starts it all made me laugh, I liked both men from the beginning, and considering the fact that the ghosts have already scared away a ton of people interested in buying the place, I hoped for a fun story with a touch of the supernatural. And that is exactly what I got!

The Pine Hollow Inn’s new owner competition draws a lot of attention, so there are twenty competitors at the beginning of the evening. Whoever is left when everyone else has left, will be allowed to buy the inn for only a hundred thousand dollars. Davis grew up in Pine Hollow, has met the three ghosts before, and wants to fix up the house so he can put his hospitality degree to good use and run it as an inn. Ryan is a construction worker who wants to prove his worth to an uncle in charge of the family construction business; he plans to flip the inn for a profit to show he knows what he is doing.

As the contestants leave, one by one, due to the ghostly shenanigans and Davis gets to know Ryan a little better, it becomes more difficult for both of them to wish the other man would give up. I had no idea how the author was going to solve the conundrum, but am very happy with the way she arranged things.

If you prefer your ghosts with a sense of humor, if you enjoy competitions and stubborn men who won’t give up first, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read with a ghostly theme, then you will probably like this free novella.
