With the increasing commercialization of Valentine’s Day in the 1950s, the Pagan deities of Love, led by Eros, gather to make sure everything runs smoothly. Shy, quiet angel Shateiel offers help, and Eros is quite taken with the cute angel, though he keeps his lust to himself. When the higher-level angels discover Shateiel’s little rebellious streak and how he’s been spending his time, they intervene to keep him from falling from grace. Now, Eros may wish he’d admitted his feeling before it was too late.
A part of the "A Valentine Rainbow" set of 14 holiday stories.
'In Trouble With Angels' by Felicitas Ivey, gives readers a very different view of what happens behind the scenes during the Valentine's Day season. Eros is in charge since he's the eldest, but it's a democracy of sorts with each of the deities associated with love, in one way or another, combining their resources. They share the load of what must be kept track of in order to have a successful holiday by forming as association called Amas in the spirit of being as unbiased as possible. Their goal is to work together, without strict rules which they consider guidelines more than laws written in stone.
Felicitas gives us an interesting, if not strictly traditional, run down of these deities and their basic responsibilities, explaining their origins and significance. The descriptions of the deities are witty, cheeky, charming, and sometimes a little sad, as with the only angel there, Shateiel, who, even though he technically should not be there going by strict interpretation of Heavenly law, but who deems it a worthy cause and takes a chance by helping. There's little wonder why Eros has fallen for this gentle, quiet, compassionate being. After all, isn't the concept of promoting love what this is all about, regardless of who or where it's done? The gods and goddesses accept and welcome his help. Shateiel's presence is only a problem when the angels get there and condemn him for associating with these pagan scum and throw the rules at him like a weapon. It's going to take divine intervention on a higher level to sort this out.
I highly recommend this brief but thoughtful story, bringing up ideas that we would all do well to keep in perspective. As the Beatles sang: “All you need is love.” Thanks, Felicitas, for an entertaining story with an eternal truth as its message.
